Intermittent issue whilst driving

D3 2008 2.7 TDV6 GS RHD owned since about 2016, no sunroofs.

Recently the following has started:
Starts fine, After a short while driving the central locking unlocks, dash lcds show nothing but dashes "-- --". Could be a few roads into my journey to ten minutes.
Hazards are flashing but no indication they are going on the dash and I can still drive at normal speeds. A little while longer driving central locking re-locks and car operates normally including hazards.

This can happen a few times in the first 20 minutes or so and eventually it just stops misbehaving. If I pull over and switch off in this state the car will not start again, dash lights up like a tree, hdc error, special programs off, etc ends with park brake error. Keys out sit for a few minutes and starts again no problem. Continue journey and may get a repeat of the issue as driving. After about 20 minutes it so far seems to stay normal.

Occasionally can do a few short journeys no sign of the issue.

One fob works fine no issues at all, other fob is unreliable. Vehicle Battery is new, yesterday new, still does it today. Tried a hard reset, no joy.

sounds like you need to use GAP tool to "introduce" new battery to the system as bcm might have not recognized it properly

have you changed the battery yourself? are you sure both terminals have good connection?

On the D3, you can usually replace the battery with no problems, I think the battery reset is only an issue on later versions. Also the OP seems to suggest that this has been an ongoing issue and has not improved with the new battery, rather than being caused by it.

I think the starting point would be to read and clear the codes.

Sounds like a problem that would be caused by either the :

Instrument cluster - Have a search, there are people who repair them
CJB - (fusebox behind glovebox)

Both items contain the immobiliser code, so you can't just fit a second hand item and expect the car to start

or the CAN BUS has gone down, which could be anything.

No need to do that on the D3. Battery was changed 6 years ago by the RAC not that I need the RAC to change a battery but inclusive cover helps as the battery costs nothing further, had them come out and change it again the other day. They don't need to handshake a new battery to the D3. I thought it could be a battery issue as it started occurring a little while beforehand but after having a flat battery at LRO Belvoir Castle gave it a charge on my Ctek when I got home only to find a couple days later voltage was back down to 11.6.

This issue only began a few weeks ago, before the most recent battery change, it is again random much like the well renowned cluster issue but is not a full instrument cluster shutdown like I suffered and had repaired previously, about 2 years into ownership and until now has been trouble free.

Last time the instrument cluster went down I lost everything briefly until it returned, rev counter, speedo, blank cluster lcds the lot, indicators and lights still worked but the cluster was obviously dead but it did not trigger the hazards.

This time I still have speedo, rev counter, lcds are "-- --" not completely blank like before, cluster lights are again all not functional but this time hazards are going, other lighting works fine fortunately but the cluster doesn't light up to correlate anything including the hazard indicators. As it occurs the central locking operates to open and returns as normal operation returns.

I took the chance last time it was the cluster issue and as I have had a few years trouble free since it was repaired seems it was a good call then, symptoms whilst similar are not identical so I am not 100% convinced the cluster is the issue this time round.

I shall look again around the CJB for any signs of water ingress and go from there.

Could it be the alternator?

For what it's worth, I got a new battery because it was five years old and the voltages were similar to yours. New battery hasn't really improved the voltages, so I am reluctantly coming to the conclusion that my alternator might be on its way out, or the belt not tight. It's not giving me any problems as yet, but perhaps a bit slower to start - it will be interesting to see what happens when we get colder weather.
