Intermittent Flashing Sat Nav screen / display

Morning all,

I was just looking for some advice on a fault I have on my Discovery 3 2007 SE (2.7TDV6), 102k miles. The car has been running great for a while now, but unfortunately in the last month or so things have taken a turn for the worse!

I have had 2 EGR valves fitted by an indy for car being stuck in limp mode (this cured the fault), new discs and pads on the front, then the dreaded gearbox shudder showed itself at around 30mph. I've added Dr Tranny myself via the gearbox oil cooler which resolved the judder almost instantly, using a guide I found on the site, so great stuff.

In the last week or so, when driving at various speeds, the Sat Nav screen starts to flicker when I am driving, as does the display on the dash, it also flashes up 'parking break fault' when it does the said flicker, I cant understand this as it only does it when the car is moving. All of the flashing then goes off and the car runs as it should. The car does not lose power at all when the said flicker occurs. The park break works fine and goes on and off as it should.

It is quite intermittent so i'm hesitant to book it in somewhere at present, any ideas what this might be and if it could be related to any of the recent work undertaken?

Thanks in advance.

Andy

Low voltage and/or varying voltage can cause these symptoms.

Thanks gents

Battery was replaced by me with a Bosch equivalent within the last 12 months. The alternator was done by Landrover while the car was still in extended warranty, that would have been about 3 years ago though at least.

Do you know which contacts I test across with my multi-meter to check the right amount of power is coming out of the battery and what kind or readings to expect?

Use terminal V red
And com black.

Set meter to volts DC 20

Should get about 14 to 15 with engine running.

Hi,

Had all of these issues myself. Swapped out battery and had alternator replaced. Turned out the vehicle was riddled with shorts and bad earths - it took my indie's guy around six hours to chase out the causes, and each time he resolved something he'd found something else would pop up. One issue was traced back to water getting into the fusebox under the bonnet at some point in the past and causing shorts in there.

The shorts and bad earths resulted in battery discharge, which in turn resulted in all of the symptoms of interupted SatNav display and audio output and error messages and amber lights on the dash. Fairly common I was told, and if the battery and alternator check out OK shorts caused by water ingress should be next on the list. Good luck.

Afternoon all

Bit of an update, my wife told me the fault occurred again this morning at around 70mph. No loss of power just a flicker in the Sat Nav screen & display flickering too. I took a reading across the battery with the engine running and was getting about 13.5 volts DC. I turned the engine off and it looked like the positive connection wasn’t all the way down on the battery. It was also a bit slack, as was the negative. I took them both off and re-connected them correctly. Re-ran the test with engine running & im now getting 14.66 Volts DC. So wondering if that might be it? It’s only started happening since the EGR valves were done & the guy who did it obviously disconnected the battery.

Will keep you posted. Thanks for the help so far.

Andy
