There are a couple of old threads on this with no conclusion. At some point the Map Lamps have lost their ability to work independently, the Map Lamp switches just toggle each one on/off only when the Dome Lamps are on.
The Dome Lamps appear to work fine and as per the manual, i.e. by switching the dome lamp switch on/off briefly or by one of the automatic activation triggers.
I have tried unsetting/setting the "automatic mode" in case this helped.
I think they are all on the same fuse, so don't think it is fuse related.
Any ideas ?

anybody got any thoughts on this, any idea of the cost of replacing the 2 main interior light units ?

Just took a peak at the workshop manual and it doens't look that complicated. Did you take the unit out and checked the wiring. Something must be shorting.
Price depends on specs. There are units for sun roof and telephone versions. Price should be around 70 quid for the 1st row unit. CLUB ILLEGAL CAR WASHERS

Hi, not taken it out (yet!) - I had a look with the light cover off and could not see anything obvious to take it apart.
Can I get may hands on the manual you are referring to ?.
