Insurance in general - pooled knowledge

As one about to embark on Discovery 3 ownership, the dreaded insurance issue stares me in the face.

First thing I did was go up to confused.com to get some ball park figures. How can they vary so much? Not just in premium but in excess and cover offered. It's a jungle out there.

There is a headline excess, but dig a bit deeper and there are different excess charges for fire and theft, accident damage, etc.
Some will only let you get repairs done at one of their 'approved' (should I say cheap and cheerful) bodyshop.
Some will only provide a courtesy car for two weeks, some for the duration.
Some might cover an off-road incident, some won't.
Some will give gauranteed value at write off, some will fight tooth and nail.
Legal cover included, legal cover not included, vandalism, windscreen..........

And so it goes on and on .....

Do we have an insurance guru (broker) within the forum that can sift and advise us through this mire?

I just want ot pay a straight premium but have peace of mind, 'should the worst happen'.

All thoughts and advice welcome, this is the most I have ever spent on a vehicle and want to know my investment is protected as best I can.

Is Tracker going to be a good thing if the alarm is (reportedly on this forum) pretty useless?

If you want tailored cover then go for Land Rover Insurance - slightly more expensive but covers most of the points you are looking for.

Others would say the NFU - they provide a good level of cover as well as off-road and trailors - and they are a reasonable price.

The other general insurance companies will provide a mish mash of what you're looking for at varying prices.

For me, I was prepared to pay the extra for the peace of mind and settled with Land Rover's own.

Thanks for the reply

I did get a quote from them of £470 which seems a bit steep compared to what others are paying, considering we both have clean licences, me an IAM member, no accident history and live in the peaceful wilds of North Yorkshire.

But if they cover everthing I want and if I don't get it TC'd then at least the peaceofmind will be there. I will investigate nfu a bit further.

Can't wait 'till June....
