Inside vs outside balancing?

Just interested...

Friend also has D3 with ATs (as do I). I've never had any balancing major balancing issues with them. Had a return visit once though to sort a wobble. Other than that, they've been perfect.

He's always had a wobble/issues at 50-60ish, went back, tried a second supplier etc etc. His were balanced inside - but took a lot of weights. Eventually he went back and got them balanced on the outside... and problem solved?!?

I prefer mine balanced on this inside (for looks), but have I just been lucky...? Presumably if you balance them on the outside, you need fewer weights for the same imbalance?

Is it just that it's easier to balance on the outside, therefore there are fewer issues if you end up at a fitters that aren't too hot? Or, is it actually better to balance on the outside?

Thanks,

John

Outside is easier, but no reason why they can't be balanced just as well on the inside. If major problems blancing the tyre/wheel, recommended is to get them to move the tyre round by 180 degrees.

Decent tyre place shoiuldn't have a problem though. Thumbs Up

Both sides come into play, I have had wheels balanced on other
vehicles where the inside and out side had different size weights
opposite each other, meaning outside and inside Whistle I must
add that was a long time ago Embarassed still today's Hi teck tires are
not immune to the problem, but a heck lot better Thumbs Up Just

Can make a real mess of the wheels on the outside. I have never had problems balencing on the inside for any cars I've had.

I had 2 new Conti 4x4 17" tyres fitted on the front at my local Kwik Fit who were doing a good deal if you ordered and paid online. The fitter asked me if I wanted them balanced on the inside or the outside. I asked for inside and they have done a perfect job, steering wheel is rock steady at all speeds....

There should be no problem sticking weights on the inside of the wheel I always do them that way, unless they are large calipers, stick on's are less damaging than knock on weights as well.

It's just a case of setting the machine up to tell it what you are doing and setting all the measurement correctly, the machine is only as good as the operator.

There is some knack to it some people chase the weight till they have no more room for weights left. The comment about spinning the tyre on the rim is spot on done it many times before.

Tyres come marked with a spot to go by the valve so they are, supposedly, in the best position to minimise weights.

I always go for inside weights for aesthetical reasons. If they are knocked on the outside they damage the paint and invariably won't go in the same place come the next new tyre/ They are trap dirt/water and the clips corrode

I've been told by a tyre fitter that you get a better balance with weights on the outside, but many people prefer them on the inside for cosmetic reasons. I opt for them on the inside.

Inside for me Too, did'nt really take much notice in the past, but when Ken did my MTR's he paid meticulous attention to the weights on the inside.

The guru that he is, ran straight n true, and got it spot on 1st time with no need nearly 2 years later to rebalance.

I recently got new tyres fitted, didnt realise until now that you could get them balanced with weights on the inside which the fitter had done.

As you say it looks better but I've found when I'm jet washing the car a couple have come off, not sure if its the jet wash or they just weren't fitted properly in the first place??
