Injectors and dash lights.

My 2007 D3 has had recently an attack of the Christmas lights on the dash. Generally culminating in an F on the gears selector limited speed,all suspension options cancelled and lowered and various other orange lights. My local independent Land Rover place has taken over the baton of diagnosis after I did the brake pedal switch, changed all the light bulbs and replaced the battery. I bought a volt reading tool for inside the car too and it’s running a consistent 14 volts under load or not.
So far my Indy has replaced the sensor/ fuel rail as it comes in one three. Hundred quid part. New fuel filter land rovers own. Run all the diagnostic codes and still the problem remains. They checked the high pressure side of the diesel pump,at the under bonnet outlet point and it’s good they now thing the low pressure fuel pump in the tank must be at fault. This is a four hundred quid plus job apparently with pump coming in at nearly three hundred quid.
An intermittent fault they think will be more likely the electric pump,than the mechanical pump which requires major surgery to reach and diagnose / replace.
All of this requires the diesel tank to be empty or near so and as I just filled it before they told me I’ve been running around in it - not on motorways though as the 30 mph limited speed it drops into is not conducive to my nerves......
In this time the old man in me has been seeking to fathom the problem. It doesn’t do it for any particular reason. Goes off when accelerating decelarating or coasting,random. Does it hot or cold as easily. Can do twenty miles before it does it or two hundred yards. I have slung a litre of thinners into the tank to see if a dirty injector might be throwing the issue. I added a tin of fifteen quid snake oil fuel,system cleaner too which came highly recommended by the motor factor selling it.....
Any ideas? I tried scatter gun myself,did code reading at the specialist and committed open wallet surgery- I’m a grand into this already with another four or five hundred to come - I just want to be able to confidently drive the vehicle without it keep throwing the bong and dash lights to some sort of limp mode.
Thanks for all suggestions in advance, my wife says six quid and a box of matches will fix it permanently but I like the car...

That is really very interesting. The F fault is a consequence of another fault....
The low pressure pump is waiting for me to get the tank down to nearly empty before they do the job.
I have run the thinners and fuel injector/ cleaner through the system this last three days aas I burn the fuel up and guess what,,,,,,,no bongs no gongs flashing dash lights or big fat F and limp mode. Fuel filter was changed three weeks ago so now I begin to speculate that the low pressure fuel pump in the tank may be struggling a bit with a blockage or similar and the witches brew has corrected enough of it to keep the engine management readings within tolerance and the gongs and lights away?
At 192,000 miles the pump wouldn’t hurt for replacing I guess but a cheap fix would be nicer....I’m tempted to take it away this weekend and stick it’s usual 400/500 miles on the pump to test the theory. Not ever so keen on the motorway breakdown/ limp mode though...

I have seen it on td5 discoveries where the intank fuel pump screen has been partially blocked with fine black gunge, never caused no start etc only lack of power at higher rpms.

I would personlly not chance it as you just know it will let you down, when its peeing it down/dark/you have your best clothes on and are dying for a sit down toilet visit!

You are almost certainly right. We took her majesty’s Volvo estate tonight instead. 180 miles in the driving rain and dark, five hours and the M5 shut for a junction and huge jams with absolutely no diversion signs even though they shut the M5 12 hours before we were on it......probably not a good night if the Land Rover had played up......

Long shot but what brand fuel filter did you fit?

I have read other threads here that claim these cars are touchy with cheaper brands.
 Not such a Disco Newbie now!

Local independent Land Rover /Jaguar specialist fitted the fuel filter at the same time as doing the oil and filter. They are very keen on using proper Land Rover parts. They did when replacing the rear wheel bearing too.the problem was occurring before the filter was changed- but at 192,000 miles was a good thing to do anyway- and continues after the replacement .
I have done the scatter gun cheaper easier fixes and paid much money for the professional diagnostics to be done and work carried out by them to correct.
If I thought it would work I’d happily sacrifice a small car and mumble incantations over a pot of used boiling engine oil dressed as Santa.....

Fourth day of running around in the D3 since I gave it an elixir of fuel,system cleaner - which appeared to be acetone and xylene which is basically cellulose thinners and a good dose of cellulose thinners on top. So far touch wood no bongs or lights on the dash and it’s never felt so sprightly off the line.
It’s early days but if I can avoid amfour hundred or more quid job fitting a new low pr sure fuel pump in the tank with a liberal dose of thinners occasionally I might just do that.
Thinking I may put a drop of two stroke oil in the tank to soften the scouring the thinners will be doing as it makes its way through the system.
I’m wondering if it’s dissolved a blockage somewhere or just allowed more pressure to push through the injector tips?

Nine days without a sniff of the dreaded bong and the F dash light and it returned last night. Tank is just down to a quarter so perhaps the in tank pump can’t scavenge enough fuel,perhaps it’s blocked....I have paid the money to have the codes read,and still no actual answer.....guess it’s another four or five hundred quid to drop the 5amk and fit a new pump in there.
