Indicators not flashing (but dash and clicker still working)

Hi folks
Got an issue with my 2005 D3 TDV6 HSE and after some help please!

The indicators on the whole of the right side are not flashing or illuminating. The dash light and clicker are still working at normal speed, and when my trailer is connected the lights on it are working too, including the right indicator, but the truck lights still don’t flash.

They are all original light clusters and the bulbs are fine. They were working a couple of days ago, but when they did flash I was getting interference in the radio signal with each flash. They now don’t work at all though.

However I can hear a buzzing noise at the front right bulb when it is (or should be rather) flashing, and this buzzing can be heard similarly in the engine bay fuse box area, I think underneath the fuse box, towards the front, near the positive power supply...

Could it be a relay issue? Or is it all controlled by an ecu? Seems odd how the trailer works, and the radio interference when they used to work...?

The only things to note that might be related, are that my right brake light bulb had blown, the left rear numberplate light was off, and the front right side light was a bit dim. I replaced all of these, but still no change to the right indicators 😔
Also I have an aftermarket horn fitted, but I’m sure that should be on totally separate wiring...unless it’s melted a wire in the loom?! Usually if it draws too much current it blows its fuse, so hoping that’s not the case.

The buzzing noise under the engine bay fusebox gives me cause for concern though....?

Thanks in advance for any help, I can’t work it out!

Check your lamp earth's and vehicle earth straps. It could also be an issue with the relay terminals or conns. Check the fuse too for good contacts and go from there!

Hi thanks for the reply! I can’t actually see any fuses or relays that relate to the indicators specifically....any ideas where to find them please? Will check wiring at bulbs again

The fuse is not the blade type, its a case type fuse IIRC its in the engine compartment fuse box near where the battery + terminal connection lives. It might be No'F47 but check in your owners handbook or the fuse identifier list under the fuse box cover. The relay is in there too which should be listed as well.
Its easy to identify with the indicators/hazzards operating!!

Could anybody give me any pointers of what other earths to check please? Had a look at all of the bulb connections which seem fine, but if the signal is produced by an ecu/light control module, then how is it that the left side can be working, and not the right?! ...but the computer still thinks it is...?!

Is there a separate earth for left and right on the module, and more to the point, where will I find this module?!

Thanks Thumbs Up

Have you got a genuine LR trailer socket connected?- or have the trailer socket electrics been connected DIY onto the side that are not working?
Remove the rear bottom storage cover to check, there should be two sockets plugged in with fuses Thumbs Up
To check if the earth to the body is bad take a lamp unit out and connect a wire to the bulb holder and another to the body or even back to the battery neg. earth.
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Yes it’s a genuine LR towbar and electrics. I think all the bulbs and light clusters are fine, as o have swapped them side to side one at a time, and everything works as it should.

I’ve traced the buzzing when the indicators aren’t flashing down to the R1 relay in behind the glovebox, which seems odd, I’m going to try and replace it to see if it makes any difference...

sounds like an internal fault with the CJB. Expensive.

If the towbar R indicator works, you maybe to bodge it, using the towbar output to drive the cars lights

Thanks, is that the same unit that’s under the glove box and has the FET that powers the indicator? I’m wondering if it’s a transistor fault, could it be removed and a new one soldered on in its place?

Well yes that is technically possible.

The unit contains the imboliser so you need to be careful

It’s a nightmare to put in and out just to test it.

The fact that a relay is clicking probably means it isn’t a straight forward fet replacement.

Could be a broken connection somewhere if you are lucky.

Oh Censored . Might that explain why my alarm has just randomly gone off this morning...? Could water be getting in there and causing an issue?

Yeah if you have a sunroof drain blocked

Park car is sensible possition in case it doesn’t move again.
Remove cjb
Fix sunroof tube
Inspect cjb to see if wet
Ur. On your own then
