In the auto, if you try to stop the engine while still in Neutral, it makes you engage Park first. Haven't actually tried to stop it in D - perhaps I should as I have a loaner today!!!
CORRECTION, having gone out and try it: In the auto, if you try to stop the engine while still in gear, it initially flashes a warning to say you're not in park, then stops anyway if you press a little longer. You can also restart while in gear, so long as you press the footbrake
