Reminds me of plugging in/unplugging the Joystick Interface on the Spectrums back in the 80's flickr

it is clear on plugging it in but i suspect i got it wrong un plugging I i indeed did turn the ignition off although I think you could read the instruction both ways. I will check with the super helpful chaps at GAP.

II. Using the IIDTool
Ensure that the vehicle is in Park (or in Neutral with the handbrake applied for manual transaxle) and in a safe environment. On 2012 and up vehicles, the radio must be turned OFF.
If the vehicle is outside, start the engine.
If in a garage, Push the Start button to turn ON the ignition.
If you plan to use the device for more than 10 minutes with the engine not running, connect
a power supply (Midtronic’s PSC-550 or equivalent) to the vehicle’s battery.
Note: Battery chargers are not suitable due to poor line regulation.
Connect the IIDTool and wait until the message «IIDTool Ready» appears on your instrument display. You can now call up the IIDTool by pressing the Resume / Enter button for 2 seconds. Navigate the menu by using the Resume / Enter button to enter, the Cancel / Back button to exit or go back, and the Set + / Menu up and Set - / Menu down buttons to navigate up or down or change values.
To exit the IIDTool menu use the Cancel / Back button to navigate to the top level menu and press Cancel / Back again or move the vehicle*. The message “Exiting Menu†confirms that the session is terminated.
*Except while viewing a live value. Please read Section 6 Live Values for more details. Remove the IIDTool from the OBD connector when done!may the odds be ever in your favor

I doubt it as Gap say "This has never been reported to us before".
Seems strange as GAP told me there was a fix planned for the powering-up sequence.
"Never happend" refers to the infotainment - not the cluster issue.

Robbie does this apply to D3's too - only I'm always plugging and unplugging mine whilst running. My electronics background can't see a logical reason for it being an issue, unless it is spiking the comms lines on boot up. But I've never had an issue.
No the D4 is much more sensitive than the D3 - even LR had issues following CCF changes when the D4 was new.
A 'hot boot' generally is not an issue, tho - at what point the IIDTool is plugged in or removed (after exiting the IIDTool menu) should not make a difference.

Who recommended updating the IP to 2013
We do - see http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic83686.html . Updating the cluster sw is generally not an issue either. We did have a minor issue with a cluster update on the D3: the IPC on the D3 does not respond with the ign OFF - which is why we asked users to do a 'hot boot'. The problem has been resolved in beta and will be released for general users as well shortly.
CC, we will continue to examine your infotainment issue though at this point we do not believe it to be a bug or problem w/in the IIDTool. The infotainment in the D4 can be sensitive and can, at times need a full shutdown which takes some time with the vehicle off. You can continue to use your IIDTool and we'll be in touch.
We do a lot of R&D and testing before products are released - but as with any other tech product, when hundreds of users start subjecting the products to myriad different circumstances and uses, sometimes unforeseen problems come up (eg Apple's brand newer patch of the brand new iOS7).

And we all appreciate It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
