Idling goes up and down - temp gauge drops

At times idling goes up and down, not only when she is cold or start up. when this happens the temp gauge drops. Switching off and on helps most of the time. Could it be faulty temp gauge, if that is the case why does it not happen all the time?

I have literally just resolved this same issue and it was the oil temp sensor. When I say I've just resolved it, I mean that my hands are still oily lol!

My car had the same symptoms, engine temp would intermittently drop to cold and then sometimes come back. Gradually got worse and went from only occuring once in a blue moon to basically all of the time.

I read a lot about it and the ECU uses the coolant temp sensor along with the oil temp sensor to measure the engine temp and display on the dash. Because it was easier (and cheap), I changed the coolant temp sensor 1st but no improvement and I've just changed the oil temp sensor.....given the car a good run and it performs as expected and it fixed.

The symptoms I had were that the idle would increase as the temp drops and I guess this is essentially the car running rich as the ECU thinks it's freezing cold. Also, from cold startup the gearbox wouldn't go into 6th gear on it's own...this is essentially a failsafe where it's trying to warm it up because the faulty oil temp sensor would have been reading very low.

I went for the messy option of not draining the oil 1st as I've only recently changed the oil...wasn't too bad really. The oil temp sensor was about £30
