Iconic Tracks.

Was having a bit of a talk about this with some workmates that go off road a fair bit and the topic of Australia's great/iconic off road adventures. I suggested the Gunbarrel Hwy, Tannami Track & Canning Stock Route as three of Our best. ( I've done the Gunbarrel in My old patrol).
Of course there is the Birdsville Rolling Eyes but I've been told there is less traffic & 4wds outside the local St. Snobs school for little bit Censored hs and sooky boys. (Whoops I went to Xavier).
Did you think I would leave you crying,
When there's room in my D3 for 7,
Climb in here Joe we'll soon be flying,
I can go just as fast with 7.

2005 TDV6 S with Terrain Response (& all that entails), Tasmods (gorn). 2008 TDV6 HSE (gone). A Dark Side umbrella (here) & car (here).

I don't believe that iconic tracks can be graded by the traffic volume.
My selection.
CSR
QAA/French Line
Telegraph Road to the Cape
In nominating these 3 I have left out significant some desert tracks. The Birdsville and Strzelecki Tracks have lost any claim to being iconic as they are high speed gravel highways. The Gunbarrel etc are significant.

My eyes are drawn to that road on the map sooo often. It 's one I'll have to do.

I did it about 4 years ago in early June outside the school holiday period. There was still a fair bit of water around. Planning to do it again next year or 09. There was no a lot of traffic in early June. A have heard that scholl holiday time is mayhem.
The only really "interesting" parts of the telegraph track are the creek and river crossings. It is really worth the effort. The by-pass road was badly corragated. The really serious tracks are the CREB, the Old Coach road (Laura to Palmer River) and the Pascoe crossing. Don't do the CREB and Old Coach road on your own as they can be very difficult for their own reasons.

The Gibb River Road would have to feature in the Top Ten worst-maintained tracks in Oz, especially when you take into account the volume of traffic. And the WA section of the Tanami is a close second. Neither are much of a challenge except for the corrugations and bull-dust holes shaking bits off your vehicles.

Yeah, I agree. In fact, traffic makes them worse! Shocked

It's much better to grade them with a grader and then follow up with a roller. Rolling with laughter
