Iceland trip & ideas
Big birthday for SWMBO this year, she's always fancied Iceland, so planning on a surprise gift of going to Iceland
I'm not going this year as don't fancy travelling, so booking for Feb/March next year.
Ideally staying for 5 days or so, based in the Reykjavik and going to hire a car (4x4 possible?) and do the usual stuff such as Blue lagoon, flaming volcanoes, waterfalls etc
Any ideas on where to go and what to do?
And is it possible to hire a Land Rover out there and what are costs etc
Cheers
Iggy/Ieuan

It’s not cheap, but Land Rover experience operate out there. AndrewS and Family did an expedition with them in Defenders and Discovery’s a few years ago. Looked like an epic trip.

Feb/March is a pretty white time to go there, the ring road should be open, plus major roads in the SW but the rest, esp the dirt roads in the interior and such will be closed. We did 2 weeks there in summer 2004 in our 90, when you could get the ferry there from Lerwick (now top of Denmark), and it was fantastic getting off the beaten track with river crossings.
And no guarantee of lava, SWMBO was most annoyed that the Mid Atlantic Ridge wasn’t doing anything.

My old LHD D3 is out there operating with one of the tour companies... probably not looking quite so tidy now though I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

If you have enough time, you could drive to Denmark and sail your Disco over there to join in the holiday fun!LR3 MY05 TDV6 2.7 HSE - 130k

I do plan a proper trip, driving there, but I need 3 or so weeks for that, and as I have to work for at least 6 more years, it'll have to wait until I'm 60
Trip now booked Iggy/Ieuan

Or sail with Bertha.
N Atlantic could be quite interesting at that time though.
Just make sure you’re covered if restrictions go on due to COVID, borders can get slammed shut quicker than a quick thing with extra quickness. It’s mid winter, when da bug is at its worst. Expect the unexpected.

And pics. No pics means you stayed at home or went to Barry Island.

Went about 5 years ago. Got an AirBnB in Reykjavik. We hired a small car and drove around. Visited the big tourist spots or golden circle. I think you might need to book Blue Lagoon in advance. We didn't bother with that one. Just drove around the island around the ring road down to Vik on south coast and back to Reyjavik. Nice restaurants there. Stock up in the Duty Free as Booze expensve

Iceland is a great choice; we’ve been twice. You can rent a 4x4 although Toyota LC more common than Discos. There is some very challenging off-road driving but you need to make sure your insurance covers you for F roads.
February is a challenging time of year to go: days are very short and it’s cold, really cold. Even in August it can turn very chilly. and very wet, very quickly.
‘Vik is a nice town, quite small and a couple of days will cover most of it. It’s quite a long way from most places. Consider renting a cabin/house in the golden circle instead. There’s lots to see and the scenery is fantastic. You can then use that as a base for day trips.
Eating out is very, very expensive. Bars are too. Shopping and eating in your accommodation is a much better bet.
There are loads of great day trips to the glacier etc but - again- these tend be be pricey £200-£250pp is pretty typical.
It’s a wonderful place to visit although if I were you I’d wait until the summer and benefit from much longer days. Driving at night in Iceland is no fun at all; and in the snow is positively dangerous.
