At that time of year make sure hire vehicle has studded tyres. Ours did and we were very grateful when everyone else was sliding of the road - rain fallen on ice cold tarmac = skating rink😳

We went a number of years ago now. We stayed in a place called the "reykjavik downtown apartments", do a google, it was really well priced compared to the usual expensive accommodation in the area.
Watch out for hire cars, a lot of the main operators dont cover the unmade roads on the insurance.
Not sure what they are like now but we used a company called https://sadcars.com/
We had a old 4x4 Suzuki and a load of fun driving up a volcano.
Its an amazing place to explore.
