Looks great and have been drip feeding the idea to SWMBO over the winter...

Did you camp or B&B or hotel? you said wildcamping is a no no, are there campsites or just designated camp areas?

Cheers,

Just looked at the Icelandic Hire Company - take a good look at the 'terms and Conditions' before going ahead - there are lots of pitfalls. For instance, crossing water / rivers of any kind is NOT covered whatsoever. When we went there last year we crossed 200 water crossings in the two weeks, some of them were up to 25 metres across. There are plenty of camp sites, and they don't tend to be too deer, be aware that things like 'free showers' in my experience meant (sulphur showers). All part of the experience.

We took the lonely planet guide, in 2005 it listed and rated camp sites. It didn't steer us wrong.

yep, campsites (last year 2012) were about £8 per person per night. BUT showers where generally extra and you had to pay a slot machine. Also some toilets ask for a 'honesty' payment.

You can wild camp but there are restrictions on both number in party (less than 3 vehicles I seem to remember) and you are only allowed to spend one night at any one location.
 Cheers

If you go off piste or wild camp they can get stroppy about it.

Can and do I understand. I was catching a video of some of the best kayakers in the world in Iceland. Managed to go off piste and get a couple,of 4x4 well and truly bogged down to the chassis. After a bit of an epic trip out the local rescuer team winched them out, guided them back to town and direct to the local police station. I think they spent quite a while talking themselves out of that one. Great photography though.

Have been a couple of times now. I was last there in Sep/Oct '12 and planning another trip next year... Fantastic place!

River Crossings - A lot of the big river crossings on the interior are created by glacial melt water. The flow is significantly higher (up to a couple of metres!!) late afternoon due to the warmer conditions during the day. If you find yourself needing to cross a large one, try & do so first thing in the morning.

If you're not used to them, watch out for the corrugations on the dirt... They will shake your car to bits! Take some spanners and have a quick check around the car if you've been traveling on corrugations, to make sure the nuts & bolts are still tight.

Tyres should be fine but you might want to try & take an extra spare as punctures are not uncommon.

I'd also say that the Faroes are worth a visit... Take the opportunity to stop over for a couple of days on the way back.

I don't check in here that often, so feel free to drop me a PM if you want any more info.

They have a vast, unspoilt landscape...

...and they want to keep it that way. Thumbs Up

IIRC - you can wild camp anywhere outside of a national park.
