I think something's broken ...

Found I had a slow puncture, went to change the wheel and whilst getting out the spare I noticed the n/s rear wheel has a lot of what looks like greyish/black grease on the inside of the rim.

There's more of it on some other bits (don't laugh - I really don't know what they are) behind the brake disc thingy

Question is - what is this? is it dangerous to drive? I think I'll contact a LR dealer tomorrow Sad

Could be teh CV joint gaiter split. Usually leaves a line of sticky grease everywhere..........

Dealer shoudl be able to sort.

TD,
Call out Land Rover Assist - they will either fix it or give you a loan car. They wont be recomending you drive a car that is squirting greese in the area of your brakes.

Taz - do exactly as Duncan suggests but play on the fact that you need a D3 as a loaner, otherwise you'll end up with all kinds of junk.
You do need to lug around 1/2 tonne of equipment, you do need all 7 seats etc. You also need LRA to make the decision if its safe enough to drive. They won't take the responsibility,so will put you in a loaner and also it bumps you up the "to do" list Thumbs Up as LRA are paying for the loaner

Driving with the gaiter split doesn't cause any real safety issues...... however, driving whilst there's no grease in the joint Shocked Shocked now that could cause you some issues.

Ring LRA, see what they recommend, but I would imagine they will collect it & get you a loaner as Duncster says, I can't see them recommending you carry on driving with it like that. I don't think the grease will get on your disk brake though due to the guard that surrounds it.

LRA may just be able to re-fill with grease & 'superglue' the gaiter back together temporarily.

LRA don't usually consider you stranded if they attend you at home, so replacement car may be an issue? Seems to vary from case to case. Talk very nicely to the chap that comes out to you, make him tea, offer him the use of your facilities/wife/pet sheep and go from there. Thumbs Up
I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

After being out most of the day I decided to remove the wheel and take a look. Lots of grease stuff over the inner wheel rim and tyre and around the rear of the brake disc shield - also a line of it sprayed up onto the inner wheel arch. I cleaned it all off (maybe I should have left it ?) but I cant see a split in the gaiter - but that could be the position the wheel is in I guess.

I'm thinking about driving a few miles from home tomorrow then phoning LRA. Trouble is as I've cleaned of the gunk theres not much too see now bu33er it! Worth a try I suppose, cheers for all the info - will update tomorrow.

Mines been recovered twice now by LRA from the driveway and each time I have had no bother getting a replacement car sorted.

update

LRA visited me today at work. Checked all around gaiter etc and couldn't find a leak. Both bit baffled where the gunge came from. Said that it was fit to drive (steadily) for a couple of days. Now booked into dealer Weds. for checking and also to get both n/s doors reprayed after the 'keying' incident. Should be back with me by Fri/Sat

Just been told the ONLY loan vehicle they have is a

John C - no, I'm sure I would have heard a 'pop' if I'd driven over some kind of container.
and don't go anywhere near greasy places or mucky puddles (on the road)

Hopefully, all will be revealed on Weds when it goes in to LR
