Your head might need to catch up with your heart on this one
And another thing, BMW don't have "problems" with their cars and they very rarely have recalls. Which means that if you Google "4.0d problems", you'll find nothing.
What BMW do have rather a lot of is "Quality enhancement" issues (that's BMW speak for "problem", or "recall"). If you Google "BMW X5 Quality Enhancement", you can while away a little time reading up on drive shaft failu... sorry, "Quality Enhancement" issues 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

Just trying to make an informed decision that's all but will google said issues ! Have to say after test driving both today I think I prefer the Disco and it's been looked after by looking at service book . Just never spent this sort of money on a car ! Just looking online to see what else can be bought for 34 grand !!

Chaps what's a real mpg figure for a Disco just normal running not towing ? A friend of my wife husband ran one and was getting 19 on motor way but assume that was flat out ??!!

Driving around A & B roads and narrow country lanes, with little traffic, but quite a few hills, I'll get 28mpg.
Longer journeys, on flat motorways, will see around 31mpg, but I never travel at a pace to attract the attention of the law.
Incidentally, I've just replaced my first rear tyres at 22,500 miles and the front ones should see me to another 4,000 miles.
Oddly enough, I did just the same thing when I bought mine. Buying new, the figures were eye watering and that buys a lot of prestige cars. But they were mostly uninteresting RWD saloons or estate cars and when you consider the engineering that goes into the Disco, it seemed pretty fair value for money 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

On 3 recent motorway return trips 2 from Kent to Guildford and 1 from Kent to Birmingham in last week, my disco was telling me I averaged around 38MPG. That was with a fair bit of stop/start on one of the legs of the Birmingham trip and the aircon on for significant parts of the journeys. I don't hammer it , I tend to cruise at just under 70 when motorway traffic allows.
As mentioned earlier, an uphill journey does seem to affect the MPG quite considerably. My overall country roads short journey average is about 32MPG (according to the disco). This is based on my 2016MY which will probably do a bit better than something a little older. When I think about what I can lug in it then it's pretty good I think.
I don't have steps, mudflaps or a roof rack which will reduce MPG a little. Gary

For the first 2000 miles I have averaged 28.68mpg calculated not trip computer. Last 1000 of those miles achieved 30 mpg during mixed driving and I would expect a small improvement as it loosens up.

Incidentally, these readings were taken on the trip computer which, on a conventional "brimming test" over 818 miles, proved to optimistic. The trip computer recorded 28.9mpg and the old fashioned calculation gave me 26.75mpg. But I'm happy with that.
Mine is a 16MY as well. I wish I could say that it had improved after it ran in, but the 20,000+ miles since it ran in have been marginally worse than the running in period. 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

The cost of Disco ownership doesnt look too bad when you arrive home and find Shakespeare the cat screaming in pain and 3 hours later the vet phones to say your 7 year service and cambelt replacement fund has been spent sorting his bladder out. D4 GS 12MY

Button pressed deposit paid as went back to the one we test drove yesterday ! Now to get rid of the Honda and Citreon Piccasso , well at least one of them just now !
BTW it's 2012 HSE model blue and almond leather . Did seriously consider buying a brand new one , but just can't get my head round paying £20 odd grand and the car is not yours unless you stomp up another £20 odd grand in final payment ?! One day maybe it will all make sense

Just hoping I made the right decision, very flash car for me and doubt it will see any rough terrain but..... it can tow my van , plenty room in it for the kids albeit eldest will be travelling less. Another plus is that the extra seats may just be a handy option for taking the parents and in law away with us. On the face of it the kids fell in love with it and the Mrs has always hankered after something like this. Bit of a treat in reality as the payment just replaces what used to be my mortgage .
Should of asked this before buying ( fool and his money etc ) but servicing, always get the feeling main dealers are going to be OTT how does that fit in with the 2yr warranty coming with the car ? Totally aware of the 7yr belt changes so no surprises with that. Presume the majority on here do own pads and discs etc ? Currently got my Honda front brakes in bits so not scared to get hands dirty !
