When should I replace my battery

The Bosch AGM battery in my D4 is coming up to 5 years old and 37K miles (I know - I should get out more Embarassed ).

Not experiencing any problems with starting although it sometimes warns me to start engine. Through the winter I leave it connected to a CTEK charging through the tow socket to ensure the FBH will work.

In the grand scheme of things the cost of a new battery is minor, so is 5 years a good run and should I replace it soon before problems start ?
Would I need to get the dealership to reset the BMS if I replaced it myself with exact same battery type (not got an IID) ?
Anything else to watch out for if I do the replacement myself ?

Personally I would wait until it starts to play up. Be good to suss out the best value replacement beforehand though. I bet of you bought it from a dealer they would do the BMS reset and fit it if you haggle as part of purchase price.....

Had to replace the battery in mine at the beginning of the week. Called Stradstone in Cardiff was quoted £280 plus VAT excluding fitting. Mine isn't a AGM battery and they are more expensive so would of thought an AGM price would be higher. I have a mongoose and JLR SDD, I picked up a Yuasa Silver HSB019 (900A 110Ah) For £119 the mongoose was £60 and I programmed a custom version of JLR SDD that I reset the Battery Adaption Values with. If you include the Diagnostics which I already had all in all £179, much cheaper than Land Rover and a higher Ah batter

I think at 5 years it's getting near to replacing it. It might be worth getting it tested but with winter soon it will be working harder and when it goes a whole host of other problems might manifest. So I would change it now for what it costs.

I agree with sean 471.

To some extent it depends on how long you expect to keep the car.

If you know you are going to change it in the next 3 to 4 years you might as well fit the new battery now & have the benefit of it. If you intend to keep it another 5+ years I might be tempted to take a risk & hand on for another year or so, on the basis that I wouldn't want to change the battery twice during my ownership, or just before I sell the car.

Thanks for your responses chaps.
I can't afford to replace the car and I've had it since new with hardly a problem and with the lowish mileage I'm going to hang on to it.
Having just checked the battery spec mine is not a Bosch, it's an Exide AGM type 90aH 850A AGM/VRLA/MF BH42-10655-BA.

However, having done another search on the forum it would appear that the Bosch S6013 would be the one to go for, see this thread http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic95072.html

Robbie said it was OK and he seems to know a lot about this sort of stuff.
The one at justcarbatteries is still listed for £150 delivered and a 6 year warranty so will likely get that one. http://www.justcarbatteries.co.uk/index.ph...ttery.html

Robbie's tip was to let the car sleep, then remove the negative lead first and replace it last, as well as leaving the car unlocked and a window open, as a precaution.

I don't have an IID or similar so am I going to have a problem with the Battery Monitoring System if I swap from Exide AGM to Bosch AGM, similar spec batteries ?

Swapping from Exide AGM to Bosch AGM isn't what causes the BMS problem, it's the fact it's a new battery! The BMS needs to know when a new battery is fitted as it resets it's charging algorithms, which is also why batteries should never be charged with the charger connected to the -ve post on the battery but to chassis Ground instead.

You may be able to find someone near you who has an IID or similar who could reset the BMS for you. Thumbs Up

Myself, I'd leave it till I started to get the signs of problems, it will let you know when it needs a new one. The "start engine" will be the message you get after listening to the radio for a few minutes with the engine off, a new battery will not stop that. Yours is the same age as my previous one, if my battery was low in the depths of winter, to many short journeys, FBH running etc, as soon as I would get in the D4 and put the ignition on, I'd get "low battery" across the main screen displayed, a night on the Ctek would solve it for a week or so.

I'm Billy Nomates so don't know anyone with an IID.

I think I'll heed Washwipes advice and go through another Winter with my CTEK attached.
I have never had any warnings, bongs etc with this car, so what are the early signs of an end of life battery ? I don't want to be stuck somewhere with the damn thing refusing to start, especially with the caravan on the back.

Well worth fitting one of these so cheap its funny and are actually pretty accurate, but more importantly gives you a baseline figure to work from and if that changes you know you may have issues coming sooner rather than later.
