What Should I Do About My Gearbox?
Some of you may know that my Disco had the dreaded judder on holiday but thanks to forum member Panoramix from Milan who very kindly send me 2 sachets of Dr Tranny, and 4-Tec, a 4 x 4 Adventure Company in Merano in the Sud-Tyrol who put it in for me, the Disco, despite having to tow our heavy Tintent all the way, made it home in one piece.
It's done 112K, but I intend to keep the car for the foreseeable future as its still in pretty good condition. So, I now have to decide what to do. There's no codes coming up.
Should I:
1. just have a megaflush and a pan/filter fitted,
2. have the TC changed for a new one, or
3. have the gearbox refurbished, including new TC, soloneid pack and pan/filter fitted.
The only places I know locally are Selector Gearboxes in south Liverpool. I've heard that Bristol Transmissions are good, but that would involve heading down with the Tintent and staying nearby whilst it's done.
All suggestions or recommendations would be gratefully received.2008 D3 HSE Stornoway Grey with Ebony Leather, towing a Coachman VIP 575

The story for my Disco judder is as follows (may be different for other people)
Bought the Disco 3 yrs ago with 109k - soon felt a slight Judder
Double dropped the auto box oil and added 1 tube of Dr Tranny which stopped it
Judder started again at approx. 135k - added 1 tube of Dr Tranny which stopped it
Judder reappeared again at approx. 145k - added 1 tube of Dr Tranny which stopped it again
Judder started again at 150k - new TC fitted 2 months ago, oil change and pan filter fitted
So I got roughly 40k out of the oil changes and Dr Tranny, but the time period the oil change and Dr tranny was effective for gradually reduced so I fitted the new TC. Start with the least expensive fixes first - Do the oil change and add more Dr T and see how it goes
Noticable benefits after fitting a new TC - I have no judder, slightly increased fuel consumption, no rattles on over run, better torque and it's so much smoother through the gears . My gearbox didn't appear to have any problems so hopefully the TC will do for now - fingers crossed - its a Land Rover it can spit the dummy out at any point
My TC came from Sussex Auto Parts and was fitted by our on Island Land Rover dealer - total cost was approx. £1000 - initial oil change and Dr T's over 40k approx £150 -£200Current:

Thanks, guys for the comments. I must admit I'm leaning towards a megaflush and Dr Tranny until more serious problems occur.
The only downside is I take a 6 week caravan holiday every year and tow maybe 3 to 4K on the continent. Having problems like this when abroad is very stressful. At least I could pack some tubes of Dr Tranny!2008 D3 HSE Stornoway Grey with Ebony Leather, towing a Coachman VIP 575

You could give BA Transmissions in Keighley a call, I have been very pleased with the recon torque converter they fitted for me when I had the infamous transmission judder about 12 months ago. Very reasonable price too.

The other fly in the ointment is whether to fit a separate oil cooler radiator to eliminate the possibility of water contaminating the gearbox oil.
Has anyone done this?2008 D3 HSE Stornoway Grey with Ebony Leather, towing a Coachman VIP 575

I fitted a separate cooler at 87,000 miles - now on 130,000 miles - had it mega flushed at same time.
I'm also doing a partial 'flush' (simple drain and refill) of the auto oil every 25,000 miles.
So far things seem OK - obviously that's no guarentee.
However, if you suspect water contamination is / has caused the problem then perhaps fitting a separate cooler now is too late as the damage is already done?I see no ships........

I'm, leaning towards a megaflush plus a test of the oil to see if any water is present, and then the gearbox done later. Quite a few people seem to get an extra 30 or 40 K before that is necessary. Still not sure whether to have an oil cooler added.2008 D3 HSE Stornoway Grey with Ebony Leather, towing a Coachman VIP 575

In the end I have taken my car to Bristol Transmissions. They have just rung me to say that the oil was cooked and and that a total rebuild is required (Ouch!).
I recently had the air con cooler replaced. Is this a part of the water/transmission oil radiator or a separate one, as I was wondering whether to have a new one fitted as a preventative measure against the water contaminating the oil?
Any advice would be gratefully received.2008 D3 HSE Stornoway Grey with Ebony Leather, towing a Coachman VIP 575

Ah that's good then, as it was only done 8 months ago, and so is likely to be the latest version.2008 D3 HSE Stornoway Grey with Ebony Leather, towing a Coachman VIP 575

The air con rad has nothing to do with any of the cooling on a D3/4 sits in front of the main radiator it does what it says it cools the gas to make everthing nice and cool and can make it nice and warm as well Discovery 3 se gone
