Hydraulic tappet replacement -click, click, click!!! |
|
Hello,
Tappet clicking is driving me insane on my D3, 2005, manual, 2.7 V6, 180k Kms.
I have tried everything, engine flush, oil + filter change x 2.
So will open her up and check hydraulic tappet wear and cam shaft.
Has anyone done the same and changed all hydrauic tappets and mountings?
If so, any part number for the complete set and any idea on cost of the parts and work?
Thanks for any advice.
Andy

It's a lot of time to take the cams and lifters out of these.
One cam drives the fuel pump at rear of engine. This is where it gets time consuming.
Maybe a new oil pump would help quieten the engine if its high mileage and a better investment or time and money

Noisy tappet clicking video. Please check the link on Youtube.
The D3 has 181000 kms / 112468 miles. 2005/manual/2.7 V6.
Great condition. I get between 29.4 miles to the gallon on the motorway and 27.3 regular urban driving.
Main big service (timing belts....) was done last year in May as per Land Rover recommendations at 160000 kms / 99500 mile mark.
Cheers.

Have you visually checked theres no cylinder gases leaking past the injector seal and that the tick is not actually an injector itself?

Yep I agree with lynalldiscovery. it does sound very suspiciously like a combustion gas leak. I have a ticky tappet on by 08 D3 but its not noticeable at idle, only when decelerating down the gears and even then only barely so. If it is a combustion leak at the injector it should be very easy to diagnose once the covers are out of the way.

Does not sound like a tappet noise to me.

Many thanks for your replies. Much appreciated.
How would you spot a gas/exhaut leak on a injector? Residue or fuel leakage around the injector or can you phyisically see some blow out from the faulty seal/s?
Cheers,

By the sound of your engine I would say it should be quite easy to pin down which injector.
Wearing suitable eye protection a visual inspection will usually be enough but not always. Firstly, remove the engine covers and satisfy yourself as which bank of cylinders are suspect. Once you have pulled back the injector shield it really should be very obvious which injector is leaking.
Removal of an injector can be a pig! and sometimes require special tools, but you can be lucky too. It will mostly depend on how much carbon has made its way around the length of the nozzle. Remember to replace any injector pipework which has had to be removed with new, and as always with these systems remember the dangers present with what is a very high pressure injection system.
