humming or whirring noise when accelerating |
|
Hi!
D4, 2.7L, manual gearbox, MY 2010
Have a humming or whirring noise when accelerating.
I can easily feel that on the steering wheel.
Ideas where to start looking?

Could be any number of things, most common wheel bearing(s), cv joint, front diff. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Can I check the parts when they are installed, or do I have to start replacing them until the noise is gone?
Start with the cheapest -> bearings then shafts and hope not the differential?

I would drain the oil out of the front diff and check it for metal fragments first, if there are any present that could be your problem, refill with new correct grade oil.
Jack front wheels up and turn them by hand feel for any uneven resistance or vertical play in them, a worn wheel bearing can be very difficult tell which one is faulty, they are usually worse when cornering not accelerating. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I have changed all oils except engine oil some days ago.
I did not find anything worrying in the oils, not even in the oil from front diff.
It is difficult to turn the front wheels because you move the entire drive with them.
Maybe wait until it gets worse or start with the bearings.

Last week, there was additional a louder humming.
Chassis Ear say: Diff front.
Okay - we renew the front diff, the front drive shafts left an right an both wheel bearing on front axle.
Louder humming is gone - perfect.
But the vibration on accelerate is still there.
You can feel it on the floor, pedals an steering wheel.
Vibes are only on acceleration..... not to much, but anoying.....
Any ideas?

thomasz -- vibration on acceleration is also very prominent sign of badly worn front tires or uneven wear of them
had that with present bus new tires fixed it
good luck solving issues
