Hot Stuff - NSR Wheel (FIXED🙂)

So here’s the thing....

Recently had to do quite a bit of moderate wading due to flooding in the area, had to park up over a weekend and then got an intermittent screech from NSR Wheel for a couple of days - but went away. I now get the smell of hot brakes occasionally and a V Hot alloy wheel suggesting all is not well.

Jacked up the beast and the rear wheels turn freely and without any drag or grinding. But still get the occasional stink and heat of burning brakes on one wheel only.

2007 2.7 HSE Auto

Vehicle has had new discs and pads plus EPB shoes in the last 12mths - with no prior symptoms

EPB does engage/release without problem, but tend not to use it because of the well documented dramas.

Thought initial post wading squeal was corrosion on brake drum face, but the heat/smell suggest another cause - hub bearing expanding when hot then freeing off when cold?

Adjusting grommet is missing from the drum...🙄

Thoughts on a postcard!

On my mum's C5 got one disc red hot when in traffic lots of braking heat builds up especially if an auto holding on brake. But then on a run cools down and contracts sounds like caliper sticking to me.

Stripped out the caliper and slider, caked with all sorts of crud - cleaned lubed and rebuilt. The hub rotates freely but sounds a bit crunchy inside - will have another go next weekend and check the EPB shoes - too damn cold at the mo!

Hotter than the hubs from hell - after 5mins at 70mph the rear started binding and the harmonic noise was mighty impressive. Can’t tell if it’s caliper/slider/handbrake or bearing.

So into the local Indy for a strip and repair - but not until 13/12 as there busy.....FFS🙄

Local trundling only until then....

After a short trim see if the center drum or caliper is hotter.

Callipers are only £45 on eBay so you may as well just order and fit.

Put seliphane over the resovoir and elastic band to stop fluid draining

Bleed caliper after.

Short trip and the temps are the same on the hub and caliper, so can’t tell if it’s heat soak. All others are low, will change it all out and build up with a new caliper - that’ll be Saturday then.....

Meanwhile - daily slow trundling to the office and back!

It was all a bit worn out really!

Carrier was binding so new pins and seals fitted
Brake shoes were binding on the inside of the drum, adjusted to free rotation but the shoes have no tolerance left - Britpart
Caliper was seizing up as the boot was burnt, so fitted a new one.

We’ll see what happens now.....

Yeehah - fixed, temps all good and mpg recovering!

Handbrake cable not fully releasing the shoes, binding up and cooking at speed - fully stripped, lubed and replaced consumables and all is rosy in the garden (for now!)
