Hiring a "Overland/Expedition" Trailer

Hi all,

Long story short, but through researching the possibility of hiring an Overland trailer for a mate, I've come across an opportunity of purchasing one, possibly more Overland/Expedition trailers. Now I'm thinking that this could finally be an opportunity to set-up that long wanted business Whistle

So as part of the decision making process, I'd like to gauge interest from the forum on if any of you would be interested in hiring an overland trailer (With roof tent, gas, water etc......) for a weekend, week or longer

Now of course it's all cost related (as well as a host of other stuff), no idea on charges, but just as a rough guide would appreciate your thoughts. Trailer would have standard tow hitch, so no need for Sankey kit to tow.

Finally, trailer (s) would be professionally built, so I won't be hiring out my home built one Rolling with laughter

Cheers

I'd certainly be interested in hiring one if they became available. Might be worth checking sites like expedition portal etc too?

Thanks guys Thumbs Up

Have done a bit of research, and you can hire 4x4's, go on guided 4x4 holidaysas well as one or two places that may offer trailer hire as well I think - but nothing concrete out there as far as I can see, but feel free to share anything if you do come across anything.

I'm just off the M5, so perhaps a handy place to pick up on your way down South Laughing

Great idea. I have been looking into them too, but the main problem is that most aren't big enough for the family (of 4) without lots of add ons. The only one I can find that really works i.e. quick to set up/take down and all terrain is from 3dogcamping.eu but they a very expensive

I've voted yes, as I like the idea of being able to hire one. No idea about the potential size of the market though. Gut feeling is that it wouldn't be big though, but that's is purely a gut feeling and based on no research or knowledge whatsoever Laughing .

If you started small, the risks wouldn't be that great anyway as you'd be able to eventually sell the trailers.

Best of luck if you go for it. Thumbs Up

Thinking of it as a part-time business, alongside proper job, and see how it goes - I'm mightily tempted to give it a go though

Watch this space, forum discount will be available of course Thumbs Up

Brilliant idea, I would suggest roof tents with / without racks would be a nice little earner too in their own right (possibly a better business model truth be told).

I had a similar thought a while ago as I was trying to budget for a couple of trips we plan to do over the coming years and I could only find the idea in Oz. If renting were an option it would certainly make adventure holidays more accessible to those with a mortgage to pay.

In my eyes the key to success here is links to adventure holiday companies, selling it to them on the basis of making their trips more accessible to us mere mortals and in return making people aware that such a thing as renting is a possibility. Links to the extent that they sell it as an optional all inclusive (kit inclusive) booking.

Similar setup to race car rental at track days and the likes of the Nurburgring. It's a good business model and expansion possibilities are interesting. Trucks etc

Do it! Thumbs Up

It's an interesting idea but will it work?

My thoughts are that most people who want to travel will kit out their truck with roof rack/box and the necessary gear. To then make those people want to hire out a trailer, would expect it to be a very well equipped trailer. Fridge, sink, stove, tent etc. will you supply all of that and the pans, plates and more or will it be expected that the customer provides it.

I could possibly see hiring out a basic trailer tent set up but not sure about a professional expedition trailer.

So plan would be all essential kit included, so trailer, fridge, tent, lights, cooker etc - you'll only need clothing and food. Costs is a tough thing, but I did look at hiring a VW camper, which re around £700 per week high season - but what would be a fair price for a trailer that covers all costs (maintenance, insurance, kit etc) as well as of course some profit? Thumbs Up

So pricing is to be worked still

Still early days though, really appreciate your thoughts and feedback as it's all helping with the decision Thumbs Up
