High miles ok ?

Hi
I'm new to the forum and am looking for a disco 3, with a budget of around 3-3.5k , with a pending house sale ( hopefully ) the Audi A4 convertible isn't much use ! So want to chip that in either px or just sell it and buy a disco 3, I see lots with 150k upwards miles, so I can only assume high miles is ok as works done ? Or do these suffer later in life Big Cry

Some fail at 160K
Some earilier. Some later.

Petrol is much more reliable. Alsoconder Range Rover sport if petrol interest you.

With that budget I would Go for disco2 or Toyota

I bought mine on 188K - it’s running like a dream and showing no signs of being tired.

Currently on 194k now.

Just check it’s history and visually inspect the common areas. You’ll learn more when you buy one - the amount I’ve learned since owning mine. There’s no comparison to reading vs hands on with one.

I’d probably put a ‘wanted‘ thread up on here - with your budget and wants.

It’s 100000% a buyers market, so DO NOT rush into the first one. Any doubts...WALK AWAY.

Nothing wrong with any car and big miles, but you have to expect unusual things to go wrong, and sometimes the cost of repair is more than the cars value.

It’s a total lottery/crap shoot.

Some do high mileage and live on, others don’t and ~160k seems to be a bit of a sweet spot for engines going PT, mine died at 166k. And service history means nothing, mine wanted for nowt and was even on 6 month/8k oil changes. Other cars, that have been neglected to a criminal degree, soldier on for crazy mileage. If those bearing shells want to rotate absolutely nothing will stop them.

Good thing about the 3k price band is that if the worst case happens there should be enough value in the parts once stripped to recoup a decent chunk of that. Keep that in mind and you won’t go too far wrong. After all it’s only money. Thumbs Up

DSL has a valid point - I was so worried about buying a Disco with all the horror stories, I limited myself budget and bought in the lower price bracket, as worse case - I won’t be too out of pocket if the worse happens. It turns out though that I utterly love Disco ownership and my first one has me looking further into the price range now.

194,000 miles and running like a sewing machine. Maintenance is key. Spent three grand on mine in the last six months. That seems a lot for a 2006/7 D3 but what could you buy for that money to equal the carrying capacity and comfort of a D3? Mine is an auto and did 35 mpg on a trip to work the other day when I inadvertently clocked it. Usually I don’t bother checking......perhaps not the ideal vehicle for my sixty miles a shift commute.

Does not need to be the engine alternator can send the whole lot up in smoke. I was lucky knowing what had happened to Prof's when smoke came from the dash quickly disconnected battery. Any car is a gamble but buying one which has been looked after hopefully is worth while. I was told to drive as many I could so that you now what a good one feels like. Possibly start looking local then travel for something that you are seriously thinking about Thumbs Up
