Hi - New (Almost) Discovery 4 Owner |
|
Hi Guys
First Post, we're about about go an view a 18 month old Disco 4 HSE that we've put a deposit on at a local dealer (they have brought it in from another dealership in the group).
It's a Land Rover owned car with about 30k on the clock.
I am looking for advice on what to look out for when inspecting the car. We can refuse it if we are not happy.
Thanks
TJ

Hi TJ,
Well it will still have its LR 3 year warranty for 18 months and this is pretty solid to be fair.
All the usual suspects, FSH, all its updates etc. Check underneath for any serious off roading that hasnt been taken care of ie damaged underpanels etc.
Also a few (very few) chaps have had smoke under hard acceleration which has been fixed with various succces with software updates and new turbo's.
Im sure a D4 owner will be along aoon with some more tips.
Best of luck and welcome to the site.

Thanks
It's coming from a main dealer, and it was a land rover owned car before, so it'll have the FSH. The dealer told us that the firmware would be updated as a matter of course in the prep. Are there any other updates we should enquire about.
We have just viewed it on arrival, before prep. Looks pretty good. Obviously need a valet but I think it's good to see a car in this state if you can. There's no scrapes that i can see and evidence on wax on some of the plastic, so maybe someone has looked out for it.
However there was a piece of trim slightly loose on the rear door, the continuation of the wheel arch. Looks like it has popped off. Made me wonder if it's had a bump there. I checked the panel alignment where I could in the time, have to say they are not perfect - but when I compared it to a new one sitting in the showroom it was no worse.
Is this normal for discoveries - of note was the bonnet slightly over hanging on the driver's site. Same on another car there.
Cheers
TJ

ask them to be specfic about it's previous life
-personally I would not want one that had been used on the landrover experience days ( although I doubt it with 30,000 on the clock) Illegitimi Non Carborundum

On signing for the car, finally got handed the log book. No mention of land rover, was registered to Drive Assist....
...ripped up the purchase form and walked away.
Have no done some ringing around asking all dealers the previous owner on these "land rover management" cars, most turned out to be similar. Finally found one owned by a person. Grabbed it, very pleased!
Thanks for your help.

TJ - was interested in your post as about to change to a D4 - if I can get the deal I want
I visited T H Whites in Swindon yesterday - he offered me a good P/Ex (compared to Cheltenham).
He is going to a LandRover Auction this week and will be looking for cars
I was told by the guy that these will be Land Rover Management cars.
Wasnt aware that you could be offered a Drive Assist care - will be careful on choice,
Thanks for pointing this out as I wasnt aware of it.

only issue i have had with my D4 is the wobbly steering wheel on braking.. there is a TSB for this.
drive car to about 50-60mph then lightly apply the brakes. If the steering wheel wobbles then it may need TSB applying.
also check all the cameras work if you have the 5 surround cameras as an option.
But to be honest, if its under warranty then anything will be sort out pre or post purchase any way. What was the dealers response to the Drive Assist issues Duncan

Yea, we've used Accident Assist before so I knew it was a hire car company. So I started ringing round the dealers and finding out the actual previous owner before even bothering to have a look. Seems a lot of the second hand 12 - 18 month old cars at the moment are some form of hire company, one was United Rental. Each one was being described as "Land Rover Management" by the dealers but the log books seem to tell the truth.
Real shame, but we have found one now and collecting tomorrow. An actual Land Rover car (named individual on the log book). On paper we are paying more than the going rate for it, but I am happier knowing the history. Car says it all too, very tidy and looked after - shame there are no options, not even the iPod link!!!!

They were very apologetic because they could see my reaction. I had repeatedly asked for confirmation on the history and was repeatedly told "Land Rover Management", although I did feel they were acting a bit sheepish when we arrived to collect the car. However we will not use that dealership or group again in the future.
It did explain a lot about the state the car was in and price, It made us realise that if we wanted a decent one with a history then it's 40k +, and explained a lot about the massive price difference on the LR used website. Good lesson learnt I think.
Looking forward to collecting the new one Tomorrow.
