Hi Guys And Girls auto gearbox help please

I have brought a d3 with a gearbox fault a few weeks back got the car cheap the guy had it a few months to travel the continent in i think it developed the fault from then it did have a suspension fault which i now have sorted and the cruise control wasn't working which i have sorted as well

Gearbox i have took all the under trays off the gearbox is completely clean compare to the tranfer box and the engine so looks like its had a recon/new box i have checked the oil and its still red and the levels are ok took the pipe off the oil cooler and they is oil there to

Symptoms of what is happening the gearbox runs absolutely fine 1st 2nd 3rd but will not shift into 4/5/6 even in the manual mode when i go down a hill and let off the throttle it will go in to 4/5/6 and i can accelerate in all them gear but after a few seconds it goes into fault mode i have some kind of noise coming from somewhere when i let go of the throttle then gose away when accelerating

what i have done so far i have replaced the lightbulbs in the brake lights for original checked the battery checked oil and electrical connections clean them had the one behind the battery out and looks fine the brake switch looks new i have got my own diagnostics machine
codes are
P0730 Permanent
P0735 Pending
U0122 Intermittent
U0159 thats the parking sensor on the rear i will be looking at over the weekend
B1A05 Permanent
U3000 Permanent
B1A56 Intermittent
B1D79 Permanent
U1A03 Intermittent
U2003 Intermittent
B1B70 Intermittent
B1D12 Intermittent
B1D12 Intermittent

I have gone through the procedure of installing a new gearbox on the diagnostics machine / clearing adaptive memory any ideas on what i should check next would be welcome thanks

I'm not sure the oil should be red? Mine was green, although mine is an 8 speed. Hope someone hasn't filled it with ATF, because it needs special oil.

As Gareth says it should not be red. Fresh oil of the correct type is slightly fawny yellow as it gets older it becomes darker and heavy brown. RED is ATF and wrong. You either get it force flushed with the correct fluid or use filos thread and replace the oil yourself in two or three goes and definitely replace the filter. When you have done that see what happens, if while you have the box open for filter replacement see what colour and condition the bank of solenoids are and the magnets, this will go a long way to telling you what you are up against.

Read recent post where the correct spec oil can be red, cant remember who made it but someone checked the spec and it was right.

To the op check the selector linkage for play and adjustment, its on the rh side of the gbox, I havent a clue how to set the linkage up! but Im sure some googling will get you there.

This thread might help

Your first two fault codes are consistent with those reported in the TSB (but only those two); I suspect the real issue is likely to be the use of the wrong oil in the gearboc

yeah oil should be yellow/gold.

There is one brand of red oil that could be ok, chances are its the wrong stuff though

Whether that really is your problem though, I'm not sure you will be lucky enough!

So which one is the gearbox code? and what does it mean?

If the oils coming out, i would be tempted to remove the solenoids ?

Some people are using this red oil for flushing boxes....

Q8 transmission oil for ZF6/8 and 9 speed auto

How you can have one oil that covers all three gearbox oil specs is beyond me....

Just my opinion of course......

You can't! There's different oils depending on the transmission and if you put Dexron III in it then it's pretty much scrap.

You have 2 gear ratio faults, and most certainly the cause of your issues

These faults can be caused by a badly worn torque converter, low oil, or worn friction material

If the oil level is correct, it sounds as though the gearbox is needing stripped and inspected...

ZF only approve their own Lifeguard oil.
There is a tech spec that ZF have to publish. It’s the oil companies that will claim it meets those specs, not ZF as they will always only approve/recommend Lifeguard.

I think if it was my car, the first thing I would try would be Complete gearbox flush. Do a search on here for "Gearbox power flush"

Interesting. As I didn't have any cattle grid effect I assumed the TC was ok. But it can cause incorrect ratio too ?
