Help with strange noise
Hi All,
Apologies for another random "my disco is making a weird, unidentifiable noise - please help me identify/fix it" post.
Anything over about 20mph I can hear what sounds like a metallic scraping noise. It seems to be driveline related but past the gearbox. If I stick it in neutral and turn the engine off whilst coasting, I can still hear it. Seems to be coming from the rear of the vehicle but its difficult to tell whilst driving.
For those with older cars (i.e. before electronic brake pad wear sensors) it is quite similar to the metal prongs that used to be on the back of pads and made a noise when they wore past their limits by rubbing on the disk.
It is speed dependant, in that it sounds like it gets faster as the vehicle moves faster. Definitely sounds like it is rotational in source.
I had a quick shufty at the weekend to check visible stuff like CV joints and nothing obvious jumped out.
I'm thinking its either brakes, diff, prop-shaft or drive-shaft related.
Anyone got any pointers before I start hitting things with a big hammer?
Would I be mad to put it up on 4 axle-stands and run it in gear (with someone at the controls, just in case) to try and identify the source?Cheers,

Stone stuck behind the brake back plate? I had the same the other week. Reversing a few metres and braking hard can sometimes shift them.

I had this. EPB falling apart, scraping on the discs. Eventually had a full red park brake fault warning. after ruining the discsVIN: A175A328***

I had this for a few days...
Thought i’d check it out at the approaching weekend only to find that before I had a Chance to do so, the parking brake system went kaput when trying to put it on. Turns out that noise was a disintegrated brake shoe inside the NSR drum within the disk.
Until you’ve ruled that out (and I suspect you do actually have that same issue) I highly recommend NOT using the parking brake. If the parking brake shoes are wrecked or one of the springs has broken you will damage the parking brake module by trying to use it. Thanks all, that helps a lot. It sounds a lot like brake issues so that's a good place for me to start.

Resurrection Needed
I am having this same toe noise. I replaced the Transfer Case, and the sound remains. It sounds exactly as you are describing, IS rotation related in my case until the car gets to about 30 mph. Then it goes away.
No performance-related issues I can tell, but I've not been driving it daily, and don't know what is right on it yet with the new Transfer Case, but I was very disappointed to hear that noise come back.
