Help with split charge system
I have a second hand split charge from a D3 that I need to fit to my D4. I'm confused with where port 86 connects to.

If your relay ground is on 85 then battery to operate the relay must be on 86, thus closing the contacts to enable your auxiliary battery to charge. Usually this is switched battery, only on when the engine is running, releasing when engine is off. Just google auxiliary battery charging and I'm sure you'll get enough information for a safe, reliable installation. If you don't understand what you are reading, have a friend who has some electronics/DC electricity experience/training to assist you, it should not be very difficult.1967 Ford Bronco 289 V8 (1968)

I would have thought any ignition-switched live would do. I'll try and see where I connected mine to.
Edit: is that a voltage sensing relay? If not, it will connect your batteries with ignition on, regardless of the state on the starter batteryD4 XS, gone, much loved, never forgotten

That is not a voltage sensing relay, it's just a standard relay, 100A rated.
You are missing either an "engine running" trigger signal, or a voltage sensing relay to create that trigger for this big relay.06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

A label on the outside to that effect wouldn't be a bad idea
To be fair, "help" with a photo of a relay case doesn't show that.06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

Okay I checked mine and reminded myself that mine is different as the solenoid is switched to earth instead by the T Max controller (which acts as the VSR in this case), rather than taking an ignition switched live to activate it.
Have you got another bit to your 2nd hand kit somewhere?
EDIT : I'll bow out, this is getting confusing D4 XS, gone, much loved, never forgotten
