Help please noise judder, donk |
|
Hi
I need some help, I have an 06 d3 manual which developed a rotational “donk” quite heavy, felt like it was being held back (binding).Noticeable a low speed <30mhp on acceleration and <10 mph on deceleration. Above 30mph no symptoms It also exaggerated on hard lock in either direction
Since I already knew the rear diff was On the way out and leaking oil, I changed the rear diff (used) but from JOS and looked good. While changing I noted the prop bearing rubber was shot so put a new prop on
Still there
Spoke to jos advised probably front diff, I also noted some play I. The front prop
Both changed (used) JOS
still there
With the help of my son, noted the noise coming from front right
Decided it had to be wheel bearing or driveshaft
Changed front hub (new) and driveshft used JOS
NOISE STILL THERE!!
driven round in circles on full RH lock at slow speed can hear see and feel a judder from front right wheel
Any help really welcome, I can’t think what else to look at !
Thanks in advance Richard

I know you mention a donk but you also say it feels like binding, do you have the 4x4 info screen to show where your wheels are pointing or gap tool to check steering angle sensor ?
Just a thought may need to recalibrate The steering sensor or the coupling has moved / slipped Metal auto sump & fluid change (3 hrs)
LR door puddle projectors (10 mins)
Tinted Bonnet wind deflector (10 mins)
All Intercooler pipes and Tbolts (2hrs)
3 injectors replaced so far (30mins)
Sunroof drain pipes both sides 2.5 hrs)
Rear discs, shoes, pads, callipers, flexi hoses, rigid brake line, n/s upper hub carrier bush and rear n/s upper arm (13hrs over 2 days)

Hi all thanks for the replies
Yes I checked the ball joints and changed while driveshafts for different used ones, no difference
The car is basic spec, I do t have any screen showing where the wheels are , so don’t this it’s that
I’ll try the DSC later, but don’t think it’s that
Any more ideas please !!!
Many thanks Richard

Are all your abs sensors working? I presume you have looked for diagnostic codes?

I’ve not run it through a diagnostic but the screen on the car usually Tells me if I have a sensor fault. I lift a ride height not clipped on the arm and it told me. The roads speed sensors are there and present .
As a matter of interest if I wanted an affordable diagnostic tool for the d3 what would you recommend? Is there software available to use with a laptop and lead. I had a free software to deal with the EAS on my old p38
I guess switching off dsc would eliminate abs sensors as a cause ?
Many thanks Richard

Not sure on DSC solution. You will need to try. Perhaps record a movie of the issue and put it on youtube?
I have an iid bluetooth tool, and it’s great with diagnostic codes and live monitoring, not cheap though.

Ok update
Took the car out again this morning
Switching the DSC off or on makes no difference, no faults being displayed on the screen
Chasing the noise around the car I think it may be coming from the back not the front, it actually more noticeable inside the car than outside by the wheels
With the car driving in a straight line in 1st but at idle speed I get the a dunk about every second ( I reckon this is approx once every revolution of the wheel)
If I turn right (half turn of steering wheel) that rate of dunk increases to about 3 times per second, if I then correct steering left it disappears for a second or 2 and then starts again
I have noticed that it does it when I apply the handbrake at stand stil, but only the first time after motion
Could it be something to do with the handbrake assembly in the rear hub ?
Many thanks Richard

It certainly wouldn't harm to do a parking brake clean up and reset per Bodsy's 'bible'. Black 05 TDV6 HSE Auto
Grey 05 TDV6 HSE Auto (Gone)

I’ve ordered up a set of handbrake shoes and fixing kits. No idea if / when they were changed but after 350k I think a new set would be in order before I dismantle
Anyone have any other ideas please suggest
Many Thanks Richard

So,
I’ve changed, adjusted and bedded in new handbrake shoes, handbrake working beautiful but still got this noise
While I had the back end apart I checked the rotation of the rear hubs, could not hear any noise no apparent play in the rear hub bearing all rear suspension joints tight with no play
The noise is most noticeable under 10mph and a lot worse when turning the wheel even half a turn left or right
The noise is accompanied by a jolt you can feel through the car
As a reminder I have fitted the Collins new parts
Front right hub
Rear handbrake shoes
Rear prop shaft
The following used parts from JOS
Front diff
Rear diff
Front prop shaft
Both front driveshafts
Rear right driveshaft ( had a split gaiter when I changed the diff so got a spare one)
New oil in both diffs and transfer box
Help !! Richard
