I would keep the D4 until it starts costing you. Get as much value from it as you can.

absolutely right - I foolishly went for a DSport after my D3 - what a dreadful vehicle.
A car. And not a very good one. Kept it 6 months and traded for D4.

I wouldn't say dreadful - its just not the same class of vehicle as a D3/D4/D5/Defender - and it would be unfair to compare it to them. If you don't need/want every last bell/whistle that comes with those, then I'm sure its fine - DG will give us real world updates in future when he gets his brand new one later this year. I’ve driven lots of DS’s. As above, it’s meaningless to compare the DS with the bigger Land Rovers. I like them, although one wouldn’t suit my needs and always thought that they have an undeserved bad press on this forum.
I look forward to driving the new version.

I chose to keep my 2016 D4 as there wasn’t much out there to tempt me to change. Still
isnt really, the D5 doesn’t hit the spot for the same reasons others have detailed, but the Defender might be an option as I like the looks, not driven one yet but the cost is prohibitive.
In truth, the D4 is all mine, sitting doing not much for a year now with 45k miles and soon to be 5 years old and still worth £30k to WBAC this week. I have a year of Warranty Direct still to run and the last service on the plan so can’t see me changing until that runs out.
Bigger picture is that the last year has made many of us think a bit differently about what’s important, the kids are leaving home so do I really need a large 7 seat 4x4 and a 6 berth tin tent? Probably not 🤔

A friend of mine swapped his dying D3 for a D Sport and loves it. It was not new, but approved 2017 model, and does everything he needs, including towing a medium sized caravan with ease.

Drove one way back in 2015. Very confused 9 speed gearbox, door rattles, cheap cockpit but I think it was an entry level model with an upbeat model name.

the early ones suffered from B pillar rattle according to owners but at least it had the bullet proof 2.2D engine, and interior was a big improvement over its predecessor, the Freelander 2
The 9 speed box issues were the same in the Evoque as well, and I believe they were dropped back to 8 speed when the 2.0 ingenious engine was introduced, which brought some new problems with it.
ive had one of the new facelifted DS as a loan car and was very impressed with the interior, much better than the first version and much better than the 3 screens in the smaller Evoque which I felt were just too many for a small cockpit2011 D4 XS 305 MY12 - gone but not forgotten

Its been a difficult decision but after much thought - I've decided to chop in my 2016 HSE D4 Euro 6 compliant (ad blue) for a Discovery Sport PHEV R dynamic HSE.... My D4 has only done around 26,000 miles and I've had it from 'brand new' - WBAC offered me £2,000 more than LR will do ... but as I've heard - don't hold your breath on that offer - although I regard my car as almost 'mint'...
Best car I've had by miles .... smooth flawless drive .... one or two issues - (nothing serious) - and always resolved by my main dealer at minimum or free (good will gesture).
Buying the vehicle from new and having a service plan seems to have helped (see my previous posts re. prop shaft failure/headliner rattle etc..) But did not take out Warranty with 'them' - as they (I know its a different company), perversely, regarded engine/crank shaft failure was/is a known 'manufacturing fault'.
So went with WD and now Motor Easy come July (if - as it looks I will not take delivery of the Sport PHEV until July at the earliest - maybe even later due to the Suez Canal blockage FFS!)
I just can't justify driving around on my own mostly (especially now) in such a big motor doing 28 mpg.
For me with the grandchildren no longer in the car and all this Climate/Covid stuff... thought maybe I should make the jump.
Mind you - its a nightmare trying to get a charging unit connected at home.... so many 'hoops to jump through' and then nothing heard for weeks and weeks.. 2016MY Discovery HSE - Black

The D5 is not a replacement for a D4. The Defender is closer. I really liked the Defender but the side opening door and lack of 7 seats were an issue alongside the fact that I really don't need the off-road capability and in today's world its a bit 'in your face'.
I ended up with a new XC90. It's super comfy, has 7 seats will tow more than I need and has an absolutely stonking music system.
I don't miss or even think of my D4. New Defender L663 110 SE (known as Noddy!)

Wallet firmly shut this year unless I receive a stonking offer on a P360. It came down to car or pension pot and the latter won. Decision made.
Oddly the cars that were offered to me, back at the beginning of Jan are still available and sitting on the forecourt. One rejected, the other now £1500 reduced. The P360 is also becoming available so more choice going forward.
