Help, please - drive shaft?
A couple of weeks ago, I had a rumble from the front. So replaced one, then the other wheel bearing.
The rumble went, but has now returned after only a handful of miles to what can only be described as a Whoop, whoop, whoop. Quite loud between 30-40mph. Quietens down when turning left and very loud when turning right.
So I'm thinking drive shaft !!!! The near side one last year had a split gator which it took off stripped down cleaned, re-greased and put back on. This one when checked is completely solid if you try to move it back and forth or in and out. The offside is solid back and forth but has a small amount of movement in and out.
Not wishing to have to replace both if I can help it, I'm unsure as to which one needs replacing.
Thanks in advance. Phil.2008 G4 D3 vehicle No 11. UK selections.

make sure your brake isn't stuck on, on one corner
see if one wheel is hotter than the other side after a drive

Brakes are all ok.
Timken 230mn.
I've also changed the diff oil. Although it had only done 15k approx. It came out dark but NO swarf stuck on the magnetic drain plug !
I'm almost 100% sure its a drive shaft. I'm just unsure as to how you determine which one !!!!!2008 G4 D3 vehicle No 11. UK selections.

Well this is still on going.........
So far I've replaced both front wheel bearings and drive shafts. Still no joy !!!!
I took it to a mate who breaks late L/R's, who after taking it for a test drive agreed with what I felt would/should have been the issue.
So, put it up on his lift and then ran it he said looks like it's the front diff.
He hasn't got a replacement. So I've been looking about. There's plenty on eBay etc but most have way more miles on them than mine. So I can't see the sense in that !! I'm thinking the best way is going to be a reconditioned one.
But.... There's reconditioned and there's reconditioned !!!!!
Has anyone had any experience, recommendations, good or bad ????

Have you tried swapping the tyres around? I had a VW t6 van that I was convinced needed a wheelbearing but on further inspection it was a warped tyre. Swapped the spare on and all good.
As for recon diffs, I had a front from a certain outfit in Coventry that the pinion bearing failed after only 15k but as it was out of warranty on time they had no real interest at all. Make of that what you will.

Just to recap.......
There a slight noise (whomp whomp) when driving straight ahead, turn left it goes quite, turn right and it's very loud.
Wheels have been checked and moved around, both wheel bearings replaced, both drive shafts replaced.
My friend whilst underneath it on a left, while I put it in drive and turned the wheel seemed to think it was the front diff. Although I couldn't hear it as it wasn't under load and the T/C was cutting in quite a bit !!2008 G4 D3 vehicle No 11. UK selections.

You can recondition your own diff, plenty of info on here on how to do it and which bearings to use etc
