Errmmmmm, now it seems we are looking electrikery. I had a problem after our Easter jaunt across Salisbury, DSC light flickered, the D3 lowered itself on its own, then the speedo and rev counter stopped, along with message Special Programmes off.
Mine was a Hub Sensor and receivor that fooled the HDC and left an open circuit apparently. When LRA came, although the main fault was'nt found apart from the open circuit, he did say that the terminal near the N/S/R wheel, behind the Spare wheel plastic guard corrodes and fills with cack, causing corrosion and sometimes replicates HDC clatter and suspension probs.
Maybe thats your prob spotter, drop the spare, find the terminals between the N/S/R wheel and plastic spare guard and spray WD40 and give a quick clean.

thanks all, will try and get it plugged in in teh morning and see if there any codes to be read...
Iain, the noise is accompanied by no lights on the dash and no nticeable loss of power or any other change in the drivability of the car. It accelerates, brakes and corners as normal during the noise episodes. The only change was the vibration/shaking today. (on a road I drive daily I should add) All TR and hi/lo and suspension settings work (as long as suspension red light hasn't come on of course) end of an era ....... maybe a Defender when it appears.......

I'm going to go with DSLs theory......EPB causing intermitent problems by binding on the rear brakes and then releasing again after a couple of seconds.
If it were intermittent, then it wouldn't heat the wheels up, but it would give you bad vibrations for a few seconds.

OK, basics, have you checked your wheelnuts? and tyre pressures?
If it were the EPB delaminating you would almost certainly have been on the receiving end of an EPB fault warning by now...
Assuming no DTC's and all the above is OK, it's possible a shock absorber / damper failed causing oscilliations on uneven surfaces, this may cause the suspension to register a DTC indicating 'too many transitions / events' in the RLCM
like I said, the only way forward is to carry out a full diagnostic to determine the root cause, everything else - including the above, is educated speculation

Sounds like the way i'd have described it when my EPB shoes were just starting to bind. But that was obvious - smell + heat.
(I won't tell you what happened next) Long succession of Disco's since 2001...

LRA have been and gone. No serious codes recorded
........nothing...unable to replicate in 20 min drive unsurprisingly........
only recourse is leaving it with a dealer to drive round in. LRA chap was not optomistic on the problem being found until it becomes terminal i
Just got to learn to ignore it and the red suspension failure warnings....... end of an era ....... maybe a Defender when it appears.......

glad it did it finally in a car park not on the autoroute as it had been only a little while earlier........... end of an era ....... maybe a Defender when it appears.......

Your turn for noise diagnosis now

Hi Sufun, haven't seen your car around for a while; how's things? Dr. Ian Malcolm:
"Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should."
Transgenic tomato anyone?
