I will reiterate that I don't believe the bulb is the cause of the problem but if it is it means that the tail light drive circuit is a totally incompetent piece of design. If it causes a serious engine management fault - a failure to stop the engine is an utterly unacceptable consequence - by fitting a bulb that, at most, has a somewhat different current draw. There are going to be many parts of the world where tracking down a genuine LR tail bulb is going to involve a ridiculously long detour - one you won't make if the suspension throws in the towel.
If you fit the wrong wattage of bulb in an E34 BMW it flags it up on the display - and that is a car designed in the 80's

I now get 74MPG on the combined cycle unless you fit alloy wheels and then economy is

Well, now that the problem's been fixed I can safely say that those who diagnosed the trouble at the start were bang on! Technician reckons some arcing in the bulb I put in last week caused the mayhem in the electronics. Offending item removed, systems checked and all back to normal. I have been advised, however, to switch to LR bulbs from now on.
Interestingly, I had been changing bulbs regularly and using Halfords own brand which obviously worked but not for long. Last week I thought I'd treat myself and go for the Bosch ones (still from Halfords) and it seems that this was the one that caused the problem. Ho hum!
As for the reliability debate, welll yes it did seem a disaster at first but the car did not leave me stranded anywhere and will be sorted at minimal expense so not too bad. So maybe I may have been tempted for a second to swap it for a Seat last night particularly as SWMBO was getting very agitated...but it was a very short second and today I can say I'm still more than happy with my choice of car.
Thanks to everyone who helped with the diagnosis. Once again this forum has been a great help.

So a LR bulb is way better quality than a Bosch one??? And of course an LR bulb in old age would never arc over.
Truly unbelievable!
If this is really the cause of the problem then my interest in this car has taken a serious knock. I admire what they have tried to do technically but to leave the electronics open to major disruption from such a trivial source is a joke - especially on a car that has lineage from a Series 1 Land Rover.

I have bosch bulbs in my brake lights. been in there for about 12 months without problems
could it be down to the way they have been fitted, ie the little peg things in the wrong place. it is easy to over turn them when putting them in, or do i have a problem waiting to appear:?:Duncan

My interest has taken a serious knock because, as someone who has been designing electronic systems for over 30 years I know that to leave a system so susceptible to such a fault is totally avoidable with relatively low cost (often zero cost) precautions in the circuit design. I believe this level of fault intolerance bodes badly for the long-term reliability of the vehicle as, with age, minor wiring loom imperfections creep in.
As someone who finds it difficult to find cars he likes and so tends to keep his cars a very long time - way beyond any warranty - I think this may be especially problematic for me.

is looking for the nature travels with the Disco and, yes once you meet a fellow Disco, which its the first time you meet him in your life, they start a streamy conversation with freindship that associated with it, and that is unique to what I refer as Discomania.
As I said earlier, you defenetly cured. No offence, enjoy your Seat and let us stay young in our manar, and yes, if you will get stuck in the mud, I'm sure a disco will be happy to pull you out.
