Help with identifying gearbox issue |
|
I'd really appreciate some help in identifying a likely auto gearbox issue.
This has only just happened with no prior warning.
Disco high revved when accelerator pressed so not engaging gear. Then after stopping, engine switched off, and then it was normal in forward and reverse. Engine switched off again, and then couldn't select drive or reverse when restarted - just high revving and no movement. Feels like gears are trying to 'catch' with a clicking sound, but now can't select drive or reverse.
Thinking its torque converter, but reading the forums I would have expected some warning through juddering and/or occasional high revving, but had none of that.
Its a 2010 model with 185K miles
Any thoughts, please?

Does your gearstick feel clunky and chunky when you slide it forwards and backwards? It should be smooth and silent.
I ask, because the linkage between the gearbox and the stick is prone to go dry, rust and/or seize and the result is the gearbox failing to engage gear properly.
Search 'gearbox linkage' on here and you'll find plenty. If you haven't time to replace it yet, just drop the shield from under the car (four bolts) and you can reach in far enough to spray it liberally with WD40 and put a blob of grease on the mechanism. That'll get you a few weeks of leeway. 2022 BMW i4 M50. Bought Oct 2022. 10,200 miles and counting...

Hi, thanks for the advice. I have a very mechanical minded friend who can take a look at hs yard.
