Help me diagnose this clicking noise (video)

Hi all,

MY2012 Disco 4, 103k miles, well looked after. This clicking sound started around a month ago. Here's a summary:

- Seems to be coming from NSF
- Linked to wheel rotation speed, gets faster with road speed
- Happens when steering wheel is centred, or slightly off centre
- Seems to disappear with more steering lock, returns when wheel comes back to centre

It sounds like a stone stuck in the tyre, but I have discounted this because:

- I've checked the tyre and removed any stones.
- It always seems to originate from NSF
- It happens on a gravel road as well as tarmac

I've jacked it up in neutral and had the wheel off. There is nothing obvious catching the disc or caliper as I rotate the disc. The pad depth sensor kept coming loose so I've tied that up out of the way to discount it.

There is a little play in the driveshaft in/out, not sure if that is normal?

Could it be a dry or damaged CV joint? The driveshaft? The front diff? It's driving me mad! Happy to try other things to rule out diagnosis.

Cheers
Iain

It sounds like something hitting the disk splash plate from your video? Did you check that for any marks? Cheers.
 Cheers

Just in case anyone has something similar, it has been diagnosed as a worn out CV joint on the passenger side with the driver side not far behind. A CV boot was replaced around a year ago but hasn’t sealed properly so the CV joint is completely worn. A pair of driveshafts have been ordered as the fix.

I know its a long time since your post but did the CV joint replacement fix your problem. I have what sounds like the same problem.
thanks
Tim

Hi Tim, no it didn't, the clicking came back less than 500 miles later.

I did eventually solve the issue though, it turns out that it was a 5mm wheel spacer that I'd fitted to clear the 6 piston Brembo conversion. The spacer holes were opening up causing the wheel not to sit snugly on the hub. I took the spacers off (turns out you don't need them anyway!), cleaned it all up with a wire brush, copper slipped the contact faces and nipped everything back up and the clicking sound has gone for good.

The CV joint, whilst needing replacing, was a red herring for this particular issue.

Many thanks for following up. Sadly I can't use the wheel spacer solution to resolve the clicking on my offside front! Frustratingly back to the drawing board. It is so difficult to pin point where the clicks and rumbles come from, and I'd rather not replace every part of the drive train on what is an old 2006MY but relatively low mileage (88k) car!
cheers, Tim
