HELP! Dealer says new diff or transfer box - after service? |
|
Took my 2006 base (48,000 miles) into local dealer for no.5 75,000 service the other day and ended up having all arb bushes redone and track rods. Anyway having parted with £600 i thought all would be well???
When i picked it up i did around 100 miles and noticed that it felt like a brake was binding at the rear when i cornered hard at low speed, it felt like snatching/dragging. This is even worse when reversing as you feel like you are pushing through resistant 'bumps'??
I took it back to dealer who lifted all four wheels off ground to test, they say brakes are fine as is EPB and have diagnosed either faulty diff or transfer box - they need to do more diagnostics next week???
My main concern is that was not an issue before the service - could this be related or just a coincidence, has anyone had anything similar?
Thanks in anticipation of your help... Wes

Yes, I had this after the last service, it was diagnosed as 'transmission wind up', ie the transfer box would not allow slippage between front and rear when turning corners.I drove about 120 miles without noting a problem, then this problem appeared at a small roundabout near my home. Next day I drove gingerly straight to my nearest dealer, where after driving it and putting on diagnostics, they performed a download, and configured the TCCM (Transfer case control module) to clutch. It has been fine since, but I'm unsure why this happened, perhaps the hurried resetting of the service indicator after they had handed me the car back after the service had something to do with it Dealer that serviced car paid the bill for this extra work BTW, so I'm not complaining.

Thanks for that, really interesting that you have had exactly the same issue, out of interest is yours manual or auto (mine is manual)? I guess they may well have the same TCCM in any case?
I have booked it back in for next Friday so will pass this on to the mechanic.
Thanks again Wes

Hi DN & Wes, I also have a 2006 autobox... I'm curious about your VIN's.. would you mind putting it in your profile like I do [partly blanked, last 2/3 digits]. Then members can quickly see from the VIN if it's near their car!
Greetings, Dan

Its official - DN is a Star!
I dropped my Disco of at the local dealer this morning to investigate a possible new diff or transfer box (up to £1200 + VAT + Labour) as outlined in the first post on this thread.
However, following the information above from DN and the subsequent sharing of further information via PM and his dealers (Lookers Park Royal) technical data meant that two hours later my Disco's transfer box had been recalibrated to enable clutching and all is well, no new diff, no new transfer box...
What a great forum with great members and great site sponsors
The only worry is why can service 5 on a 2006 Disco stop the transfer box clutching, if DN and myself hadn't noticed this (which took us both over 100 miles) what damage could have been done or worse still has been done to others Disco's that has cost them major work?? Wes

Had front diff replaced under guarantee today, and lever on box to change gear/position [automatic]. The "whine" sounds different now : high-pitched part & grumble [almost like tire noise] are gone... Gone is the 'torque-steer'... The 'transfer box' cannot have been involved. Oil was changed 6 months/ 8000km's ago but is still honey-coloured and doesn't smell burned... Auto-change is smooth and around correct revs... Dealer says recallibration of transfer-box was a "recall" from LR some years ago and all cars should be treated by now...

Just checked the Faultmate settings and the Faultmate can do this. (Not tried it yet) Will do some more digging on the calibration process. Bodsys Brake Bible

I had thought (wrongly now it seems) that this was for a Clutch (Manual) transmission rather than what we now know to be the clutch arrangement in the transfer case (that acts in a similar way to a diff). But as DN had his done (he has Auto) to fix the issue, it makes sense that it's not just limited to Manual

It's a calibration programe that runs through hi ratio and then exercises the clutch plates (I assume) it then changes to low ratio and does the same.
It then gives the instructions to change to low ratio and wait for the sign to cone up and then change to hi ratio and wait for the sign to go.
Pretty straight forward as you are stationary with engine off and epb on.
My 07. Hse has some newer software available for the TCCM bit I haven't updated it. Will try to find out what the new version does. Probably just a employs a different locking strategy Bodsys Brake Bible
