What the heck - Spare Wheel Winch Design

Ok, so why and when did they change the spare wheel winch??

Popped the cover with my trusty 22mm socket and electric screwdriver in hand only to find a flange with a hole in the side. Presumably this hole is for the hook on the scissor jack handle but what was wrong with the original hex bolt design?

Ensuring consistent tension whilst raising with the winch now requires 2 people or risks jamming the mechanism.

A major step backwards on a design that was less than perfect in the first place.

I see the problem, just spotted this on ebay

Looks like they've made a bad design even worse, no leaving a socket on there and pushing an extension between the seats into it now, you're pretty much forced to empty the boot and lift the seats to get at it Sad

Yep, that's what I have so my handy socket extension will not be required anymore and it a little more challenging keeping the tension on. I used to pull the spare away from the vehicle to keep tension on it whilst winding with the other hand until gravity took over. Not as easy with the new style.

DG - does your MY13 have the old hex style fitted then?

Mine is built end of Feb 13, and has the new type. Sad As Slimer says, no leaving a socket on there.

I suppose it is swappable to the old type though?
