hi all, im needing to uprate the D3 with a good set of mud pluggers, what can i do? appart from fitting the AT2 grabber.
im looking for something that is more serious than the bfg mud terrain. im on 18's at the mo but will change down if needs be.
are any of you using something that works well, on SNOW, ICE, ROCK, and mud and very steep terrain.
im talking serious scottish highland stuff, not green lane-ing.
Any advice?

Hi Boby, I'm sure some of the more experienced will be along shortly with more comments / advise but there is not a lot of choice for 18" Goodyear MTR's seem to be the most agressive you get here. I have looked at Cooper Zeon LTZ but can't find it in the UK
Andy at AJS tyres will give you best advice. The MTR's seem to be a good tyre, You are not going to get a Symex or Insa Turbo special track in 18" rims.
I'm not sure about 17" rims - it will depend on the model you have - and what brakes you have as some smaller rims will not fit-

At present the Goodyear MTR's are only available in 19", in 18" your pretty much stuck with AT2s or similar; 17" you can go for Cooper ST or STT's - DiscoDunc runs these and seems very pleased with them, so may be worth a PM to him.
Personally I have an onroad shiny set of 18" wheels with Perelli ATRs which I've also used for green laning and they were as good as my off-road set of 18" with AT2's. I am contemplating getting a set of 19" with MTRs one day, but that's after I've worned down these AT2's.LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

Most aggressive on the 17" is the Cooper STT. On the 18" it's the AT2 and on the 19" it's the MTR.
Kumho have been promising to deliver a 17" KL71 for about a year but alas nothing has turned up yet I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

IMO the STTs are excellant. I went for these (17 inch) instead of the 19inch MTRs because of the larger side wall and general feedback
The STs are also excellant, a little less agressive and good on the road.Duncan

Discowex and Barry g are running on Maxxis bighorns(I stand to be corrected)and have out performed Cooper STT and 19" MTR in the mud and rocks over here on some of our off road days,may not be good for road use but if you are looking for a reasonably priced off road tyre that performs you won't go wrong with these.

just another quick question, what size/type rim in 17 inch will fit the disco 3 and where can i get them and what size of stt /st will i need? + where, i wonder if AJS4x4 could sort me out the whole thing, meaty off raod tyres and rims that i can just swap for my existing road going 18's? i think a pm is in order!
im off to glen Shee, upto 3000ft in a few weeks, need to tackle some very challenging tracks, and keep up with two defenders that are totally maxed out for off road work.

Usually you can get a set on ebay for about £250 with standard tyres - new and unused. Best place to look!

Here is link for Maxxis,it does not give 17" on chart but they are available.You should be able to pick up 17" rims on Ebay or keep an eye on this site in For Sale/Wanted.Might be worth putting up a wanted post for them.

Maxxis Bighorn 265/70/17 about two thirds the cost of STT's . I've used/have Cooper STT's , 19 " Goodyear MTR's ( daily tyre) and my preference in muck & rocks is the Maxxis.
I got mine from Camskill but possibly AJ ( see sponsor list) can source them also.

For serious mud ..........
Interco Super Swamper radials are made in 265/70/17 - not sure if they're available in the UK. They'll rub, so a bit of judicious wheel-well modelling is required. See my gallery for pics. That'll keep you up with the double-difflocked boys
In the same size you can get the Maxxis Bighorns or the Mickey Thompson MTZ. Both are better than the STT in thick mud.

Now - 2010 RRS 3.0 TDV6, rimini red, 18" rims + Cooper LTZ, rear eLocker, Spider tuning box, GOE protection plates and rock sliders, GOE 3way shortened rods.
STT's on 17's are the bizz off road. Being a lazyarse I'm running mine on the road at the mo. Seem fine over the last 1000 Miles, but abs does kick in earlier on the ice "To finish first, one first has to finish ...."

any official views on the most aggressive tyre available. I run Grizzly Claws on my Defender but they only come in max 16inch. they are almost unstoppable and I'd be keen for a similar set for the D3Duncan

Disco4x4au, A bit OT, I looked in your gallery - is that a plastic guard covering your front grille? looks like a great way to stop mud, water and crap getting in.
