Heated Steering Wheel - occasional failure ?

I really appreciate my heated steering wheel on these cold mornings.

The D4 has not been used greatly in recent weeks due to CV19 restrictions. Last week I noticed a battery low charge message when I went out early on a cold morning, once under-way I switched the HSW on, to no avail - the wheel remained unheated.

I cursed, and assumed that there was a problem with the HSW. On returning home a put the car on charge overnight, and on Sunday drove some 90 miles prior to shooting on Monday. The HSR worked.

On Monday, it was very cold and we drove quite a distance between drives. Initially the HSW worked, but towards the end of the day it again failed. The electrical load was heavy with heated seats being used. The battery, new 15 months or so ago could have been fairly discharged.

The question is does The Battery Management System preclude the HSW from working when the battery is not fully charged; or is there some other reason for the intermittent failure of the HSW ?

I had the same issue with my FFRR. I assumed it was battery related. Turned out it was software that needed to be downloaded again or updated, sorry I can’t remember which.

the majority are not TLAs, they are TLIs ... initialisms. Acronyms have to form a word or the sound of a word.

Nigel, I remembered that it also affected the heated seats on the FFRR. Totally random, no pattern as to when it would happen.

Thanks Tom

That could be the problem, but I'm unsure, as to date the HSW has been 100% reliable, and I have had no problems, yet, with the seat heating.

All had been well with the hsw and seats on the FFRR. Which is why I assumed it would be the battery.

Hope you get it sorted. It’s definitely hsw weather at the moment.

Round about 10th December my HSW suddenly came back to life. I had done nothing to encourage it.

I was, naturally pleased, and was Censored off when it failed again on Christmas Day, again with no apparent cause.

Where now?

Regards

Nigel

I assume the HSW is controlled through the clock spring, could it be a contact issue?

Also, when you switch the HSW on, does the tell tail light still illuminate on the switch?

Thanks Ron

Yes the indicator lamp comes on whether or not the HSR is working.

As the fault is intermittent I suspect that it could be a clock spring issue, but I have not heard of this - there's not much else to fail is there?

If I replaced the clock spring do I go for genuine JLR @ £250 + or after-market at less than £100. If the latter any recommendations of a particular supplier please?
