Headlight covers
On my recent trip a Galah (winged variety) hit my LH headlight cover and busted it. I wish to replace same to protect my headlights and am wondering if I have to go to L/R, or, is anyone else making these yet? The originals are pretty ordinarily made (see earlier topic) and I would rather others if made. I realise I'll have to buy two.2006 HSE TDV6 Bonatti Grey, ECB bull bar, tropical roof, LG Next G car kit, Tom Tom GPS, UHF, Mitchell Bros tow bar, Kimberley Kamper Limited Edition camper trailer and 23 foot Haines Signature half cabin (Towed separately!)

LR or at least my local dealer (Karratha) can supply perspex clear covers for $130 AU.
I've duct taped the single clip on the top so they can't slide out anymore. Works fine!
Duct tape is a D3 essential IMO. I've also used it in the past to secure the external 'A'pillar covers (and judging by the rattle on windy days, will be using it again before long!)Have a nice day!

WOPAC5 - suprised to read, but glad to - that you can get clear covers for the D3 head lights too - I didn't think they did a clear perspex cover like they did for D2...

Alternative to perspex headlight covers
My LR dealer advised me against fitting the perspex covers LR supplies because they are prone to dislodge and the bonnet protector snaps at around 110kph. I could not find an after market alternative so I have decided to use a urethane film over the headlights and taillights (http://www.ventureshield.com). This film was originally developed for the US military to stop sand abrasion of helicopter rotor blades in the first Gulf war.
The film comes in 2 thicknesses. I am covering all front and side panels covered in the thinner film. This protects the duco from stone chips and scratching from tree branches.
I am using the thicker version of the film over the headlights, tail lights and rear window to stop stones breaking the lenses.I am no longer seeking the truth, I am now looking for a good fantasy.

Interesting about the 110k limit...I've done a couple of runs to Perth and back...1600k in 13 hours, you do the math...and the covers are totally secure.
3M make "Light Skins" which is a clear stick on sheet similar to the stuff Cat is talking about, not sure about the protection factor for big stuff. I think it will not stop a rock breaking the light, but will hold the peices together.
Surfice to say, there are a number of options...pick the one that suits your needs. 8)

I wrote in before about the bonnet protector. Mine sang like a loud bull roarer at anything over 80kmh. you couldn't hear the radio over it. It also broke in the first two months of fitting. My dealer was going to look into it - but guess what? Nothing happened! At least I got it and the headlight covers in my deal. They quoted $92.00 for the plastic headlight covers, I'll have to buy new ones. At least it was a real galah that hit it - not the one at the dealers.
I note L/R quote $500 odd bucks for the headlight protector bar covers. PBob, as I said earlier, duct tape across the metal clip will hold the headlight protectors on. I'll post a pic later.
The metal bar ones would be good for branches etc, but next to useless for stone protection, which is what I need them for.Have a nice day!

I had a look at the Lightskins. They are much thicker than the urethane film I am having fitted but lack the optical clarity.
The advantage with the film is that the supplier has a computer template for the front of the D3 so he is able to cut the film with a computer controlled cutter to precisely fit the head lights and bonnet profile. The bonnet section also has precise cutouts for the LANDROVER letters.
I will report on the success or otherwise of the film when I return from Cape York in August.I am no longer seeking the truth, I am now looking for a good fantasy.

I had lightskins on my D2 headlights for 7 years and NEVER had any problems with cracks or chips nor them yellowing.
I have fitted the thicker lightskins (2mm) (i bought them at supacheapauto) to the D3 headlights and fog lights. They are crystal clear to my eye.
I have also put the thin material on some of the exposed frontal surfaces to protect against bugs and chips.regards
