HDC - has it been reworked on the D4 ? |
|
I was never a big fan of Hill Descent Control (HDC) on the D3. OK, so it was great in some very steep, very loose offroad situations - but even then - very noisy and quite "aggressive" in use. But these last few days of snow and ice has shown HDC on the D4 to be a real life saver.
First you have to find it though. The button is not nearly as obvious as it was on the D3. I had to search for it with a torch in a dark car the other day - but once found - it seems to work better than on the D3. It is very reassuring when slowley descending a steep icey slope. And yet it isn't nearly so grating on the brain as the sound in use is much more civilised.
Has HDC been reworked on the D4 - or am I just using it properly now and maybe never gave it proper credit on the D3 ? Disco 4 TDV6HSE

I know that the software behind it has been reworked to give a "soft start", holding the vehicle back in the beginning rather than the "all or nothing" effect of the D3s HDC...
This allows you to be more precise when starting to drop down a slope as the D4 won't accelerate (albeit until a very low speed) and then start braking.
But I guess this shouldn't really affect the noise it makes? 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue

I read somewhere that the noise created by the HDC is intentional to reassure the driver that it is working.
The whole operation could be almost silent if the bods in LR had deemed it to be. Apparently! So it wouldn't surprise me if they had 'refined' the sound of the HDC on the more refined D4. I haven't used HDC on my D4 yet!
