HDC - EPB fault - cruise - wrecked rear brakes
Whilst up in the Highlands I descended a steep mountain track for a mile or so with HDC doing the work very effectively. At the bottom when changing to road mode an EPB fault displayed on the dash. Pushed the EPB handle down a couple of times and this went away. (I hadn't engaged EPB, very seldom use it at all to encourage it not to fail). Noted strong smell of brake pads at the back.
Pottered around countryside for rest of day with no further issue, no fault, no smell form brakes.
Whilst heading home on the motorway with cruise control on at 70mph, a severe juddering started on a long curving uphill stretch. Varied speed, tried brakes (normal) and gears, improved at low speed but stayed bad at 70. Pulled over to have a look. Much brake pad smell and heat off rear brakes.
Pottered home at low speed. Took car to dealer to inspect.
Replaced rear pads, shoes and calipers, the latter two under warranty, it would have been expensive without.
No reason for failure given.

Hmmm - not saying this has anything to do with it of course - but for me - if you don't use it you lose it. So I always use the handbrake and height control ..... only trouble is I haven't put this into practice on the terrain stuff (and probably a few other bits....)... 2016MY Discovery HSE - Black

I dont know were people get the idea from that if they dont use the epb, it wont fail... , By not using it your doing more damage in the long turn. Cables, pivot point on the epb shoes, and sliders will all seize up if not used.
I did a D3 the other day and the owner said he never used his epb incase it failed, everything had to be changed because it had seized up, even the return springs had rusted to the shoes and one had snapped...
Use the dam epb

I was cleaning my EPB 2 months ago. All was rusted as previous owner did not use it. It was put back together nicely. Bedding in done on the go. When parked it on my drive after driving it and applied EPB the horrific noise was once more waking up my neighbours.
I will have to repeat the whole procedure. Or did I miss something?Disco 3 HSE (55) - gone

I suspect you may not have adjusted it correctly. 60Nm on the hub nut and then 8 clicks back on the ratchet is the recommended method for setting it correctly.
