When we were at Drumclog on Sunday, HDC was used to go down a few hills. I believe that when using HDC if you want to increase speed you should be able to just press the cruise control increase speed button, this wasn't happening for me either by using shorts pushes or holding it down. All other aspects of the special programmes and HDC appeared to work properly.
This certainly works on Auto versions, should this also work on a 2005 S Manual? Joined the BMWX5 45e group

I'm sure it works with either gearbox....
The difference is however, pretty small and I think it must be individual presses, not a long press like you can do with the cruise control speed.
To be honest if it's a bumpy/uneven hill, then it is difficult to detect the speed difference when pressing the + or - buttons a few times....

Came as Standard. When I did the LRE a couple of years ago I could feel the difference, but just nothing there this time. Joined the BMWX5 45e group

I had thought about that, but a faulty clock spring affecting the CC buttons would be much more noticeable in normal driving than possibly not working with the HDC whilst off-road...
The fact that Dave didn't mention the CC not working made me assume it was ok 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue

I've had problems with the clock spring - where it will work at certain steering wheel angles, but not others. At times, the stereo controls will work - and turn the wheel and they won't.

Adjusting level of HDC intervention certainly works on my manual using the CC buttons but as said, takes quite a bit of pressing to make a difference especially in low box.

If you go back to trying it on a hill........
Give it a whirl out of gear then any change will be more obvious. Club N.E.R.D.s

Pressing the CC "+" button while in HDC is supposed the increase the set speed by 1-2 km/h (so I guess about 1mph). So very small increments, which is good in tricky situations.
