Canada 2005 LR3 4.4 V8 SE Auto Alveston RedLR3
Hazards of Death, HDC, Transmission, Special Programs...

Hi folks, I'm an ex-pat Brit seeking help from Nova Scotia. Apologies this is my introductory post, and for the length. I have just privately bought an '05 4.4L V8 LR3 here in Canadaland, and it's giving me grief already.

On Monday the vehicle would not start, a ton of faults came up and all manner of lights, including permanent hazards, which would flash even without the key in ignition, and:

Transmission fault - limited gears available
Transmission fault - traction reduced
HDC fault - system not available
Engine system fault
System fault special program not available

I seem to recall seeing Suspension lowered at some point as well.

The following lights are on:

Amber parking brake
Red parking brake (flashes)
Battery
Oil
Airbag
Yellow exclamation inside circular arrow (what is this?)
Red vehicle with up/down and left/right arrows (what is this?)

The coolant gauge also goes to maximum hot and the red light is on.

The battery voltage was only 11.8v, so got swapped out yesterday with a new one, and all seemed great!

I foolishly tried to operate the sunroof, which opened and did not close all the way. It would not recalibrate after multiple attempts either. Wonderful. The manual says it won't recalibrate if the battery voltage is low.

So on the highway with the heated seat on, and the fridge on (I did not realise this at the time), the car crapped out on me, hazards flashing, limp home speed, and all the aforementioned faults. There was a subtle electrical smell as well.

I was able to turn off and back on again, and made it home without any issues. It would not restart on my driveway, and all the lights/faults are back. It does not crank and there is a single click in the glovebox area (vehicle is LHD). Unlike earlier in the week, the hazards only come on when the key is in the ignition.

The battery earth lead shows good continuity. The battery voltage is ~12.5v and was showing 13.65v when the engine was running at idle yesterday. Is this typical? I've found conflicting information from extensive reading.

I do not know where the engine/frame earth is, but would like to check this - pointers would be helpful.

I purchased an IID Tool earlier in the week, and have been able to extract the following faults:

Some of these codes are just noise of course, but I don't have the experience with these vehicles/IID Tool to know which ones matter.

I would also like to check the splices and CAN bus wires in the passenger sill, but not sure how to remove the cover under the kick plate. Does the passenger front seat have to come out?

The vehicle has some history, including water ingress that required a new CJB (coded by LR), cowl, sunroof drains etc. It also had a new brake pedal switch and OE brake light bulbs in the last year, which can apparently cause my symptoms. All the brake lights work.

The TCM has also been replaced in the past, and the connectors look good.

Any advice on what the check next will be much appreciated, including how I can get the damned sunroof to close![/b]

Poor condition battery, brake light switch, brake light bulb, alternator, green corrosion in the TCCM in the battery box, especially if it's been washed in the engine bay.

Thanks! I have a spare BLS that I can fit, so will probably tackle that tomorrow, because why not? The battery is also on charge.

I'm thinking the alternator has something to do with the battery being at its current voltage(as well as gross misuse of voltage), but welcome any specific feedback on whether the figures I mentioned above are symptomatic of an issue or not. I don't know what constitutes good with this vehicle yet.

Have you checked to see if there’s a water leak anywhere on the fuse boxes etc.
When you’ve put the IID in have your tried to clear all the faults
When you bought it and drove it home was there no lights etc.
To be honest it could be a number of thinks but definitely seems like water ingress somewhere.

I haven't seen any signs of water ingress, and have partially lifted the passenger side carpet.

I tried to clear the faults using the IID, but they came back straight away.

So can maybe forget water.
I had a similar problem working on a neighbours D3. We changed the alternator. Changed the rear and side lights bulbs, brake switch and still no luck. In the end we got it down to an ABS sensor. Changed cleared faults all was ok.
There’s quite a few sensors that can cause the light brigade.

Sorry forgot to add, the faults will return if it’s a faulty sensor.

Is there a way to test/interrogate the ABS sensors?

Not sure if this link works but if you have a multi meter you can check

We had a broken wire, put a new connector in and all was fine.
So may not be the sensor could be a faulty wire.
Anyway good luck.
The next thing is to get in contact with whoever bought the motor off and tell him the problems and just ask if he had come across them before you bought the car.

The former owner and I remain in contact.

Thanks for the link - i wonder if the IID can save me any of this effort?! If not, I'll see what I can do about the manual test.

The IID will tell you a abs fault but won’t tell your where or what the fault actually is. A Solus will tell you,
But in these circumstances there’s quite a few faults.
Just remember to make sure the battery is well charged or on a trickle charge you dont want it draining or your wasting your time.

Any ipc (instrument pack) fault codes, or when on the fault code screen, click show all emus and see if the ipc is there.
Perhaps the instrument pack is dropping the CAN out and causing your faults?

So the car started this morning, twice in fact! It's still running. The battery battery showed 12.45v immediately beforehand. It has started charging around 14.2v.

I was able to clear the codes, with the exception of:

Engine Petrol

P0116-24 (36) Engine coolant temperature - circuit range/performance - General signal failure - signal stays high

Ventilation

B1B78-84 (2F) System pressure - Bus signal/message failure - signal is below allowable range
( on 08-11-2020 08:38:52 at 121796 km )

A new fault came up on the car info screen: Reduced Engine Performance.

The ventilation controls work, although I cannot recall what happens when the dash is impersonating a christmas tree.

Here is the Show All ECUs readout. Apparently I don't have a rear diff!
