Happy To Sacrifice The D4

So driving home I saw a car stop suddenly shortly after entering a junction to my right going up the hill.

It looked odd and as I started to continue driving past I glimpsed a mangled push bike and then the woman in the road. Realising that the car coming towards me was just about to turn in at speed on to the accident scene I swerved my car between the oncoming car and the victim in the street.

It's funny waiting for impact and I wondered what it would feel like but somehow the driver coming towards me managed to swerve in time and continued down the main road - so the D4 is still in one piece. The bloke did really well given the road conditions - dark, slippery, rainy and going downhill. Thumbs up to him.

Spent the next hour administering first aid. Nearly 30 mins for the first responder to arrive, 35 mins for police and 45 mins for the ambulance. I'm not sure who was helping who but within seconds I was joined by a St John's chap and a cardiac nurse. The St John's chap did the top end as we both noticed the stoved-in windscreen and high-up damage to the car - but not a mark on her head could be found. I am guessing her backpack took the top end impact.

Unfortunately my primary search revealed slight movement in her pelvis/right hip, probable break to RH femur and potential dislocated knee. She was in a lot of pain.

As for me, well I trashed my RAF uniform, got quite wet and very cold. Now enjoying a beer at home whilst waiting for the police who want to take a statement, despite me not actually seeing the impact.

Hope she is ok but I guess I will never know the outcome.

Robbie top bloke not only for protecting her but for staying with her and applying first aid. There are not that many out there who are prepared to do that, I was assisting a motorcyclist and asked people standing by looking for help all turned and went away.

Well done fella... Remember my Dad doing something similar way way back.

Women came off her bike down a country lane somewhere near Settle, in the days before everyone had mobiles.

Luckily we did, Dad ”parked” to protect her and rung the local doctor etc. Less hands on than yourself though, and never did find out what happened to her!

Jesus, that was 1991 ish... I'm getting old!

Thanks guys, not sure I am deserving. Embarassed

On reflection I'm kinda wondering if I could have caused another accident with my instinctive reaction. Thankfully the bloke coming the other way was well switch-on and has probably driven home wondering why some mad fool pulled in front of him.

I did all I could for the lass and I am pretty sure that she should be fine in the long run. She is 27 years old so everything is in her favour and she gave reassuring screams throughout. I've done first aid in the past when they have suddenly gone quite, which is a worry especially if you are on your own. Sadly I had the ultimate honour in the 90's with a young soldier who knew he was going; I will never forget that moment, which of course is as it should be.

Almost all the bystanders were very helpful. I asked for coats and I got them; I asked for blankets and they appeared from somewhere too. I asked for follow-up calls to the ambulance service and they were administered swiftly too. I was just one of a number that helped out, nothing more.

Well done Robbie

Did you feel secure and safe with your actions as you were in the D4 - or was there no time for that sort of thought ?

Good job, lots of people would turn a blind eye afraid of the 'litigation culture' we seem to be getting more and more Neutral
