Grounding the back

If you get beached am I right in assuming that the weight of the back of the car rests on the spare wheel?

if so this doesn't seem quite right? But looking across the back of my car the full size spare is definitely the lowest point.

Agree it's not great, but probably cheeper than the bumper being ripped off or the exhausts getting stuffed.

Although I've grounded the back a few times, and dislodged one corner of the bumper cover, careful examination of the spare reveals not a single mark. Really dont know how.

I've now fitted a protection plough on the back (the multi height towbar) in the hope that this will protect the rear / tyre. Trouble is, the departure angle is now terrible. Not too sure what's going to happen next time it meets rock - though I think I can guess.

Be careful leaving the tow-bar on when off-roading. I came down pretty heavily on mine a couple of times and the damn thing wouldn't come out!! Took 10 or so minutes involving removing the spare tyre, a large hammer and jamming a screwdriver into the little gap behind the tongue Evil or Very Mad

Cheers,

Gordon

I take the tire out from underneath off-road. But either way it's a vulnerable low spot.

This happened on a departure into a mud hole Confused Luckily it was just the plastic jobby, anyone find a better way to route or protect the exhaust?

I think AndrewS and RLD may have fabricated a combined diff guard and exhaust shield? Worth asking them on their return from North Africa.
I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

I guess, they're to try to keep the spare 'relatively' clean & keep the heat away from the tyre?

Just a thought on this, I'm sure Uncle Ray could fabricate a 'wheel' sized cover that could be connected by a chain to the bit that winds the wheel in. That way, would still protect the wheel and wouldn't make it any more difficult to get the wheel out. Linked to the one on AndrewS for the exhaust and yoiu'd be well away Thumbs Up
