grinding noise in the back

hello,

I've just bought a disco 3 and during the first trip, it started to shake on the motorway after 20 miles,
pulled over and the left rear brake was smoking and hot, brake pads stuck on disc
came loose and could run again,
when i got home, handbrake on, ok
but when i took the key out, a grinding noise (loud) came from the rear for about 5 sec
should i worry or is this normal
had a handbrake mall function in the morning as well at the bakery on the display

Sounds like a brake caliper stuck on and this has also affected the handbrake?

Patrick - when you switched off, was it a grinding or more of a "screaming"...?

Sounds like the EPB (electronic park brake). You have a manual which means it comes on automatically when you switch the ignition off. The EPB tension has gone and it will need to be readjusted. The longer you leave it, the worse it gets resulting in it sticking on and requiring a more expensive repair.

The other problem you describe could either be a sticking brake caliper (as mentioned by The Transformer) or a sticking EPB shoe.

You say you have just got the vehicle - if it was from a dealer then get them to fully and properly readjust the EPB and replace brake shoes etc.
The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...

Club "yes, I too have had the EGR's replaced..."
Club "yes, I too have had the compressor replaced..."
Club "yes, I too once had the car at the dealer for a couple of weeks nearly 4 weeks over 4 weeks...5 weeks"
Club "yes, I too have had EPB failure..."
Club "yes, I too get mysterious bings and bongs..."
