You had to mention The Vapors. Now can’t get that tune out of my head. Big Cry Big Cry

Re the sausage, a tad odd but tasty. In a land of oddness, well from our perspective, it fitted in fine. Thumbs Up

Off to Nagasaki shortly, 2 hour train ride. Trying to pluck up courage (seasickness version) to go and see Hashima Island, a la Skyfall. Weather is due to be good so might be on the cards. Thumbs Up

PS Cue next swanky train, home for 2 hours or so. Thumbs Up

And greetings from Nagasaki. Boooooooootiful place, hotel virtually in the centre so ideal for bimbling around. Interesting slow(er) train ride from Hakata, nice window on this more rural part of Japan.

Back to trams around Nagasaki. We got there just when the school kids were turfed out so everything was packed. Plus a bit of panic sesh as we worked out how to pay, these trams don’t accept the “national” payment cards. Rolling Eyes

Interesting warning for the lifts. We haven’t discussed a strategy for earthquakes, it’s bound to be a bit more complicated than our crocodile strategy where I just had to out run SWMBO. Whistle

And a few pics from our wander round the harbour area. We were waiting on this hydrofoil coming in, sadly it went into boat mode too early. A few warships behind incl a Arleigh Burke class destroyer.

Cue pano.

A few firefighting tugs hanging around as there were no fires to fight. Whistle

And an oldie worldie paddle steamer, not paddling.

And a bit of a better shot of the hydrofoil, very 007. Thumbs Up Will try and get a better pic of it tomorrow when it’s up on its wings.

And finally a mahooooooodive anchor from a liner that dated back to 1908. I think, all the text was in Japanese with just a fuzzy picture of a liner and the number 1908 in the text. Plus yours truely in there for scale. Thumbs Up

Morning all. Thumbs Up Good day wandering around Nagasaki, beautiful day here so a lovely day to hoof it round the sights. Though might have cheated a little. Whistle

Firstly the Peace Park. Lovely place with loads of statues, a few pics to give a flavour of it.

Cute little sign warning peeps re work. SWEEEEEEEET. Thumbs Up

Ground zero.

And the only pic I took in the museum. Interesting place to wander around.

A few pics from up the ropeway & observation platform at the top.

Then back to hotel for a schnooze in the tub for a couple of hours. They desperately either need longer baths or somewhere to put my feet. Shocked Luckily no pics. Thumbs Up

Then out for a wander around before going to the local shopping centre’s food hall for scoff. Bumped into one of SWMBO’s Japanese cousins.

On the walk round the park noticed this little boat had popped in for a visit. SWMBO was hoping that me taking photos would get me told off, or worse, but no luck. She still pretended she wasn’t with me, which was a bit daft as we were the only non Japanese around and I was shouting messages of affection her way. Whistle

Then food then a walk back. Now cube cars are everywhere in Japan but the Honda ones are extra, extra cute. I’ve just got to work out how to get one home. Hand baggage? Whistle

And finally the observant will have noticed a helicopter tail boom just above the front of the Honda. Well it’s as good place to park a Loach as any. Thumbs Up

That’s all for today, retired with a nice bottle of Vino and chocie biscuits. Thumbs Up

PS Forgot this pic, a car parked that brings the car to you. Dude had handed his ticket over and 30s later it was there ready to be driven out. Thumbs Up

Nagasaki looks great, I imagine the Peace Park was poignant

Morning peeps. Another day, another Shinkansen.

This time down to a very rainy Kagoshima near the end of Kyushu. The weather forecast is for extremely heavy rain between here & S Korea so we’ve gotten off lightly.

Unfortunately we can’t see the active volcano in the bay, we should be able to see it from the room if it’s was clear. Rolling Eyes That’s much to SWMBO’s annoyance as she wants to see smoke and lava. Careful what you wish for me thinks! Shocked

Looks like the fall back plan for a rainy day, navigate the centre of the city from shopping mall to shopping mall with minimum getting wet. Thumbs Up

Cheers. Thumbs Up Bow down Bow down

Still piddling down here, resisted the urge to go on the ferris wheel that’s on the top of the shopping centre attached to the station. Bit high in crap weather for me.

Here’s something that is in pretty much every food court or restaurant section of shopping malls, the plastic food displays. They are, for most of the time, really, really realistic. These are some of the best we’ve seen in the few days we’ve been here. If you’re hungry they certainly get the juices flowing. Thumbs Up

We haven’t decided on scoff for tonight, resiting the lure of western fast food. We were going to try a bottle of Japanese wine that we plucked from a rack thinking it was a shade under £5. When we got to the till it was Y1,700, £12.20, so it got put back and a Chilean selected for just over £4. Tastes great in plastic beakers. Mr. Green Mr. Green

Back to watching Sumo, all in Japanese of course

and the Sakurajima volcano appear and disappear behind the clouds. Just need that block of flats moved. Whistle

So far the Sumo is far more interesting. Dude on the left is good in spite of busting up his right knee earlier in the tournament. Plus he’s non-Japanese. Thumbs Up

Now there’s an image you’re not going to unsee in a hurry! Laughing Laughing

And a day of tourist trains. Thumbs Up

From Kagoshima to Yoshimatsu on this one. These are standard diesel commuting trains that have been decked out nicely and only run at w/ends. They are pretty pricey for short journeys but the JR Pass includes them. Thumbs Up

It stopped at what we think is the oldest station on the line/in Kyushu/in Japan/in the world (not sure which), which has a resident cat. Needless to say said cat was elsewhere when our train rolled in. Rolling Eyes

Yoshimatsu to Hitoyoshi on this one, standard commuter train to left.

It stopped at this view point. We’re glad there was an info sign thingie to tell us what we were missing. Shocked

Had a bit of a wander around in Hitsoyoshi, visited a temple and had cake & coffee/tea in a very nice cafe, as you do. Whistle

Also caught this automaton/clock show in front of the station, really cute. Thumbs Up

Then Hitsoyoshi to Shin Yatsushiro on the steam train.

Great viewing lounge at the rear with good seating for little ‘uns.

A little bit smokey, but peeps outside didn’t seem to mind. We felt like celebs as lots of peeps waved at the train.

Then to return to Kagoshima Chuo from Shin Yatsushiro on the Shinkansen. It took us 45 minutes to get back, it had taken us 8 hours to get there. We cut the steam train short as I clocked one of the stations we were stopping at was a Shinkansen station so we changed our prebooked return tickets to the next train. Simples. Thumbs Up

This is what the Shinkansen looks like from the platform.

Needless to say when we got back to Kagoshima it was still socked in with cloud. There were quite a few landslips with peeps being marooned on trails. Plus there is the matter of the active volcanoe in the clouds. This is JR’s impression of it.

And a pic in an underpass just to rub it in. Our hotel is the big beige block in the middle. Rolling Eyes

Then off to supermarket for supplies. We were not tempted by the whisky that’s £3.93 for a litre bottle!! It comes in bigger plastic bottles, this is £13.34 for 2.7l, not such good value.

And some stuff comes in 4l bottles, sadly no prices but it’s bound to be cheap and will be good after the 1st litre. Laughing

We stuck to the cheap Chilean VC. And cake. Mr. Green Thumbs Up

PS Now got NCIS LA on TV, dubbed into Japanese. Shocked

I could use it as weed killer, the grass is going to be a shade long. Whistle

Not a lot going on today, just had a short walk down to the harbour area. Saw our first sun fish in the outside part of Kagoshima Aquarium and watched the cloud slowly lift from the volcano.

Now it’s lifted, she looks quite impressive, would look better without the apartment block.

Good to see in the event of a tsunami our hotel is the place to be. We should be fine if we’re in as we’re on the 9th floor. Thumbs Up

Tomorrow we’re off to explore the island by bus, should be a lovely clear day. We’re heading up Kumamoto tomorrow so it’s stash the bags in the lockers at the station. The lockers cost according to size so it’ll be see how small a locker will hold both bags. Thumbs Up
