"Greenlaning" in Fuerteventura - Canary Islands

This island (Fuerteventura) is very different from the others - each island in the Canarias has its own landscape and flavour.

Fuerteventura is often used by Hollywood due to its crazy landscapes that can - with some clever video effects - look like mars or some other prehistoric land.

The island is mostly made up of volcanic rock, so there are many many sharp rocks sticking out of nowhere.

The reason for me returning to LR was to explore the crazy places and views this island has to offer.

This will be a documentation of my exploring the island on its equivalent of "Green Lanes".

The car has been with me for less than 1 week, but I could not resist any longer.
For over a year I have been dreaming of visiting these remote places.

I took it easy, to get a good feel for the car and how it handles the various situations.
Right now it has Pirelli Scorpion Zero's on, which I plan to switch out for an ATR set at some point in the future.

Last time we went to Fuerteventura we got a plague of locusts! Lovely place apart from that!

You have the ideal car to explore it.

@Hardware - I sent him a link to the album with full res pics Smile

@Gareth - Wow, that must have been some really unlucky timing. We havent had any plagues here for the last year, although im based in the north of the island so I could have escaped it. But sand/dust storm have happened with a big crazy one about a year ago that left visibility at about 20-30 meters.

It was November 2004 when we were there. Stayed at the Bahia Real just outside the town.

Locust swarmed for a few days, and really freaked out a lot of people. I was ok with them to be honest, just like flying king prawns!

The last time I went to Fuerteventura was in 1990, it was my year of military service, which at that time was mandatory here in Spain. We were based in northern Tenerife next to the Rodeos airport and we went to Fuerteventura for military maneuvers with all the trucks and anti-aircraft artillery pieces etc ... ... little to say about the magnificent landscapes ... because we didn't even stop to look at them ... it seems incredible now to think that at that time we circulated freely with our trucks, anti-aircraft batteries and all kinds of military vehicles on the beaches regardless of environmental issues etc ... very dry and dusty place, we went in camouflaged green and turned brown reddish ... were crazy years!

Magnificent photos by the way !! Give us more please !!

Nice dunes Thumbs Up I, too, have been on Fuerteventura. It was a few months after Y2K. I had gotten paid a nice sum to be on-call during event itself. Loved the dunes and loved the town of Corallejo from where one could see to Lanzarote.

@ Gareth - Ah, the great swarm of 2004.

@ ruben - They still use an old airstrip at the bottom of the island for random military training. Sometimes with helicopter landings and supplies being dropped in from GC. I will gladly make more photos, and will even try some videos too Very Happy

@ kajtzu - I am based in Corralejo, but alas, we cant drive on the corralejo dunes as they are now a protected area... but to the south of the island there are some other dunes. Will visit them once ive got my ATR tyres on... which could be a while as the current tyres are almost new Sad

@ ianm27 - Thanks, I hope so too Smile This is the earliest D3 still driving on the road afaik, so its quite unique.

Decided to go for a "Golden Hour" drive the other day.
Found some nice sandy tracks - with crazy volcanic rocks that looked like knives sticking out.
Happy to say no tyres were injured.

There were a few patches of "Sandy Mud" caused by recent rain.

So I guess the car had its "First Mud".

Performed like an absolute champ - didnt realise it was this bad. Kept getting funny looks of passers when I rejoined the main track. Lights/licenceplate were cleaned before rejoining the road like a responsible offroader Razz

D3’s still look great when they are filthy, you have some amazing trails where you are, hope you have some recovery gear for those sandy conditions?
Keep the pics coming. Thumbs Up
