2010 Discovery 4 3.0 TDV6 HSE Auto Ipanema SandDiscovery 4

After a weekend in the D4 HSE having traded in a D3 HSE 2007 I am in a better place to give an informed answer to this question :

My Pro D4 Top 10 :

1 - The 3 litre diesel is a gem. Significantly more pull than the 2.7 yet smoother and quieter. Overtaking is a pleasure and she flattens hills as if they aren't there at all. Particularly good when combined with 2 below.
2 - The vehicle now corners like a train on rails with much less body roll and seemingly greater grip levels. Turn in is sharp and responsive - can hustle this babe through twisties with a huge grin on your face.
3 - The interior quality / luxury is a big leap forward with very good tactile finishes and (mostly) great ergonomics.
4 - The ability to control ipod and mobile phone from the screen and steering wheel is great - never could do that on the D3.
5 - Exterior look is smoother - put a D3 and a D4 side by side to realise that there are more changes than you might have realised.
6 - New exterior colours - our Ipanema Sand is a good'un - but I would still choose Nara Bronze if I had been able to (if one had been available).
7 - New interior colours. The seats are a slightly darker shade of alpacca and the dash top is almond not black. Works a treat and not nearly as scary to keep clean as I had feared. The boot space and load cover are now also light coloured fabrics and plastics - not black - which works well.
8 - The fuel filler to prevent petrol being put in a diesel. I know how easy that mistake is to make (never did it in a Disci but once did it in a Merc) so comforting to know that a petrol nozzle should be detected. Mind you - it does mean that the diesel nozzle doesn't go far into the neck of the filler which feels a bit worrying that diesel may spill back at you when brimming the tank.
9 - Steering wheel feels lovely - a little more "chunky and tactile" and the heated wheel will be a real treat on winter days.
10 - Front seats are better than in D3 - particularly like the lumbar support adjustment and softer edegs on the seat cushion.

My Con D4 Top 14 (but some picky ones) :

1 - I prefered the digital clock readout on the D3 as it was larger. On the D4 it is rather small and there is lots of other info around it.
2 - I miss a good old fashioned key and a barrel in which to keep the key whilst driving - feels like this could be a source of problems in future (and it weighs equivalent to a small brick).
3 - Chucking a load of logs into the D3 didn't feel like a sin - it would feel all wrong in the sumptuous soft leather interior of the D4.
4 - My D4 HSE has cost me £10k more than the D3 HSE which feels like a hell of a hike. But credit to LR - I still bought it and they seem pretty much sold out so they can't be overcharging (can they ?).
5 - 20" wheels are a bit bling and definitely react worse to uneven surfaces than the 19" wheels on the D3.
6 - The rear light clusters are also a bit OTT - I prefer less of this type of glitzy finish.
7 - Tinted windows - why have em ? They just make the interior a bit darker and I have to be very careful not to shut the rear hatch on the dogs tail as I cant see where the dog is through the darkened glass.
8 - No rear seat aircon - bit of a con to have dropped that - but still left the blanked off roof controls.
9 - Still no compass read out in the rear view mirror. I loved that in the D2 ES - sad init !
10 - Adaptive lights gone - I quite liked them and it always made me smile when the lights did the little "dance" when turned on.
11 - No fridge in cubby box - was great for keeping a can and a bar of chocolate cool.
12 - D4 has a front wing vent (air intake) on both sides. I recall that when the D3 first came out LR heralded the fact that there was only an air intake on one side and no "cosmetic" twin on the other side (like there was on a RRS) as proof of the vehicles "function over form" pedigree. Clearly form has caught up with function now.
13 - Some shut lines not quite a good on the D4 as the D3. For example the fuel filler sits proud of the vehicle, one door not quite lined up and the glove compartment needs a firm shove to shut properly. This is build quality issues though rather than design.

Hi
I thought the HSE came with heated front & rear seats! The one I test drove certainly did have them - Does this mean there has been (another) spec change? Cubby cooler is an option that you have to pay for now too. I also really wanted the rear A/C but I guess they will get round to it whenever Sad
It is still a lovely car though - can't wait to get mine Wink

My HSE has heated rear seats and the LR website still shows them as standard.

Embarassed oops - afraid I took Daughter number one's word for it. The buttons for the rear seat heaters are still there, but they are impossible to see from the front seats, neck craned over to the back. Sorry about that misinformation .......

The lack of SE means I'll either be keeping my 57 SE longer than i thought...or swap to a MY10 RRS SE next year.

I can understand there being room for only one of the XS or SE but the current XS spec is a long way short of MY 08 D3 SE spec. ( no arm rests; no premium stereo; no rear audio..etc)

basically for me there is no D3 vs D4 debate until they bring out an SE or upgrade the XS.
