Grabber AT2 balancing problem.

Fitted AT2s last Dec. Have had a balancing problem since then. had them rebalanced soon after fitment and they were lots better but still wobbling between 80 and 100k. Had them rebalanced again and a slight inprovement. Swapped front to back and still had a prob. Then refitted old 17" Goodyear Wasters to see if it was a prob with the car and they were fine. The day after I refitted AT2s only to find that all the wobble was gone!! Always torque up nuts to factory recommendation. The wheels went back on the hubs that they came off.
Car went in for 72000k service (including a wheel alignment) the other day and I have the wobble again!! Does not make sense. The AT2 importer tells me that he has had no reports of balancing probs with these tyres. The dealer who serviced the car says that there have been issues with these tyres.
Anybody elese had probs?[/u]

Not sure if it's quite the same problem but I've been through some strange balancing problems recently. It was detailed here: http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic19137.html I'm still not totally sure what was wrong or why it mysteriously went away?

Is it possible to torque up the wheels without them sitting 100% right on the hub? - just a thought.

AT2s Balancing Problem

Paul,
Read your threads with interest. can be a very frustrating nightmare!!

Have just removed and replaced front wheels but moved one stud opposite way on each hub. test drive shows that the wobble has almost disappeared. Still not as good as it was before service though.

DiscoJools, That's very weird...
I wonder if there's a connection here?

Beginning to feel like we're messing with dark forces and magic powers right now!

When I had my BF Goodrich A/Ts fitted to my last Discovery the tyre fitters could not "zero" the balance on a few of them. They reckoned A/Ts were very difficult to balance and M/Ts were near impossible.

AT2s again

G'day Desert Traveller
You say you just had your AT2s refitted or did you mean they were fitted for the first time?? After refitting mine yesterday avo I thought that things had improved but after a bit more driving I found that they haven't.

DiscoJools,
After the last desert trip (5000 kms) I took them off and refitted the wranglers as they were near new. When the wranglers reached a point where I thought they were not safe I had the AT2's refitted. I only have a set of 18" rims (6 off).
When the AT2's were first fitted and now I've had no balancing or alignment issues. They are noticably rougher, slightly noiser and not as good as the wranglers on the black stuff. I am comparing new wranglers with new AT2's not worn wranglers compared to new AT2's.
You would be surprised how often people say how much better the new tyres (generally a different brand etc) were than the old ones. BUT they are comparing worn with new. How many people have tested new with new?

Also had a balancing problem with AT2's when I swopped front to back. Had this done at the dealer (who outsourced the alignment and swop). Took them back, but no better, so gave up and took them to my local who re-balanced the lot. They are fine now.

Phoned the dealer to complain and was told off-record by one of the service staff that they have many complaints about their specific tyre dealer from LR customers, but the big-shots won't change Whistle

I haven't been happy with the balance on my AT2s since fitting them. At first I think the fitter just mucked up on one of the wheels as it was woeful. After they had a second go it has been "acceptable", but there is a definite wobble above 100km/h. I've been wanting to have it re-balanced - will update once I do this.

From my experiance the General AT2's are far better to balance than say the BFGoodrich AT KO's, if you are doing an all internal balance it can take time to get it right, if you don't want to upset your customers it's worth spending the time to do it right the first time, no point in doing the job twice, you can't charge twice so it's wasted time and money, it's a shame that the quality control has slipped on the BFG AT KO's, not unusual to put twice the amount of weight on a BFG than the General and in the worst cases send them back as "unbalanceable", wife thinks there is no such word as this but I am sure you know what I mean.
